Installed Ubuntu 9.10 on a USB Drive. Windows XP does not boot anymore

Asked by Pawan

I installed Ubuntu 9.10 on a USB Drive. Windows XP is already installed on my computer.
The problem is that I cannot boot Windows XP anymore.
I do not get the option of selecting between the operating system XP and Ubuntu

grub LOADING ......
ERROR NO SUCH DISK
GRUB RESCUE
>

Can you please suggest the following:

1. How to boot Windows XP. I do not have the original XP Installation CD?
2. How do i uninstall Ubuntu 9.10 to get back to boot to XP. Will uninstallation of Ubuntu bring back my PC back ot XP.

Your help will be greatly appreciated.

You will not get the option of choosing between Ubuntu and Windows if
Ubuntu is on your flash drive. All you have to do is take out your
flash drive and boot windows. If i didn't understand the question
properly, please notify me.

I tried taking out the flash drive and then installing but this does not help.
I get the message as I mentioned above.

Thats the reason I want to uninstall Ubuntu 9.10 and bring it back to the original state before I install Ubuntu again.

I hope you understand my question.

Thanks.

I think you have installed both thing on same location. If you have installed both in different drive. Can you identify windows folder like "Program Files, Windows, Document & Settings" in any of your HDD Partition. If you cant identify, answer is you overwrite ubuntu on windows. Ok while u formatting with ubuntu u have to select "manual formatting", and format the partition which does not have windows O/S, But default formatting it over takes whole HDD. Ok if u have any windows installed O/S in HDD, you need to get it from other and use it. to un install ubuntu same way put ubuntu cd go live Ubuntu and then go to system->Administrative Tools->Partition Editor format Desired Drive using appropriate file extension, fat, NTFS for windows.

I am sorry ... I am not too much of an expert in this but then .. I just have one HDD - C drive.

In a second computer where I did the same installation, when I remove the flash drive, it allows me to boot XP.

I am wondering, how to bring it back to the original state of XP

I also believe that Ubuntu was installed over Windows XP. But to clarify things, can you please confirm if how did you install Ubuntu? Was it:
1. inside Windows?
2. If not, did you install it side-by-side with Windows?
3. If not, do you still remember if you selected to use all the hard drive and install Ubuntu in it?
