i cannot install ubuntu after download

I have downloaded unbuntu but my windows xp pro says it does not recognise the file format. How do i install it?

You downloaded an iso image of the ubuntu install cd. You should burn it onto a cd with some cd burning application such as nero. I don't know which cd recording application do You use, but almost everyone has a "burn cd image" or similar named option. You have to use this option and choose the ubuntu file You downloaded.
