Somehow, I uninstalled Firefox -- please help!

Asked by fresnobob

OK, first, I'm a total Ubuntu noob. After hearing how great Linux is for years, I finally decided to take the plunge and try it out. I had a Dell Inspiron 1420 that had Feisty Fawn installed, and I managed to get it updated to Hardy Heron. The thing is, Firefox was still stuck at 3.0.18. I tried following some online instructions to update it to the latest version, and the next thing I knew, the Firefox icon was no longer on my desktop as it had been before.

Online searches are suggesting there are several different methods for reinstalling Firefox. It would seem I can use the Synaptic Package Manager or something called PPA. Geez, is it really this complicated? I'm totally comfortable installing, removing and updating apps on my Mac and Windows machines. But so far, Ubuntu seems totally confusing.

Can someone please help me figure out an easy way to get Firefox installed again and to keep it updated?

Thanks so much.

Fresnobob,

First problem:
Ubuntu 7.04 (Feisty Fawn) was the sixth release of Ubuntu. End Of Life: October 19th, 2008. See !eol and !upgrade for more details.

Second problem:
Because Feisty is EOL the default repositories will not work anymore, meaning you are open to any security bug/issues because your Ubuntu cannot be updated. Plus you will not be able to install Firefox in the traditional manner.

So, if this is a fresh (or new) install I HIGHLY recommend you backup any files you currently have on the system and reinstall using a newer (supported) version of Ubuntu.

Best of luck,
George

Fresnobob,

I'm SO sorry - "...and I managed to get it updated to Hardy Heron" so you have already corrected what I was mentioning above.

From a terminal try running "sudo apt-get install firefox" should reinstall Firefox from the default repository. I don't really recommend trying to upgrade Firefox to 3.6 - if if you really want to you'll need to add the PPA from https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-mozilla-daily/+archive/ppa I have not personally had good luck with using the PPA version of Firefox, or manually downloading the Firefox 3.6 binary.

Again, sorry for my haste on the first answer.

Best of luck,
George

Thanks for the help, George.

I followed your instructions and got the following output:

Reading package lists ... Done
Building state informatio... Done
firefox is already the newest version
The following packages were automatically installed and are no longer required:
   firefox-3.0-gnome-support xulrunner-1.9-gnome-support
Use 'apt-get autoremove' to remove them.
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.

Based on the above, it sounds as if Firefox was already installed. However, when I select Applications > Internet there is no sign of Firefox.

On my desktop, where there was once the Firefox icon, there is now an icon for the Namoroka web browser.

Any idea what's up?

Hi, I am a not very old in world of Ubuntu but I had similar problem some time back and while I was googling I came across KDE environment and KUBUNTU in particular. I installed KUBUNTU and it brought back the mozilla icon.

I found the instructions on this site particularly useful:

http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/kde

and some of my experience can be found here: http://makegadgetswork.blogspot.com/2010/03/kubuntu-blog-entry.html

Best of luck !!!

Thanks for all the suggestions. I have tried and tried, but I still can't get Firefox 3.5 to install. Here's what I've done:

-- Gone into the Synaptic Package Manager and removed everything related to Firefox

-- made sure /etc/apt/sources.list contains the following two lines:

deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/ubuntu-mozilla-daily/ppa/ubuntu hardy main
deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/ubuntu-mozilla-daily/ppa/ubuntu hardy main

-- opened my terminal

-- typed sudo apt-get update

-- typed sudo apt-get install firefox-3.5

When I do all that, I get the following output:

Reading package lists... Done
Reading state information... Done
E: Couldn't find package firefox-3.5

Can someone please help?

Arrg! I just realized why I was getting that error message: I had unchecked the boxes in System > Administration > Software Sources > Third-party software.

However, after I went to the terminal and typed

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install firefox-3.5

I wound up with 3.6.2 installed (as did greg above).

All I want to do is install the most recent version of Firefox 3.5. Can someone please help?

if you remove
deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/ubuntu-mozilla-daily/ppa/ubuntu hardy main
deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/ubuntu-mozilla-daily/ppa/ubuntu hardy main
these two lines are for 3.6.2 they needed removed , or unclicked in software sources
then reload when closing restart then check check for updates . with sudo apt-get thin see which firefox you have.

Thanks for the response, Greg.

So I removed the following two lines from /etc/apt/sources.list:

deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/ubuntu-mozilla-daily/ppa/ubuntu hardy main
deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/ubuntu-mozilla-daily/ppa/ubuntu hardy main

Then I rebooted, opened the terminal and typed the following:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install firefox-3.5

Here's the output I got:

Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
Package firefox-e.5 is not available, but is referred to by another package.
This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or is only available from another source
E: Package firefox-3.5 has no installation candidate.

Thoughts or suggestions?

Greg,

I checked out https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+question/104316 but it seems to lead to http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1410623, which is the threat you already recommended. Or am I missing something?

So you basically want 3.5? well remove 3.6.2 and then install 3.5 from synaptic, that might just work, also remove the firefox ppa daily builds repo.

A Computer Engineer was asked by his five-year-old son: "Dad, what is Windows 95?".
"Well, it's 32-bit extensions and a graphical shell for a 16-bit patch to an 8-bit operating system originally coded for a 4-bit microprocessor, written by a 2-bit company that can't stand 1 bit of competition."

OK, thanks again for your help. Please remember I'm a Linux noob, so please go slowly.

I opened up the Synaptic Package Manager. I'm not exactly sure what to do next.

Do I scroll down the list of packages until I find firefox 3.5, because I'm not finding it, even though I have the "All" tab selected in the left of the window. (I see lots of entries for 3.0.18, but nothing for 3.5.)

The other possibility is that I click the Search button at the top of the Synaptic Package Manager window and enter firefox 3.5.

Like I said, installing apps on Linux (or Ubuntu, anyway) is a really different experience than installing on either a Mac or PC.

Thanks so much.

hardy heron only supported 3.0.8 if you truly want a better linux system download ubuntu 9.10 burn to cd and install.
i have an old 8.04 cd i run the live cd on it and checked to see what firefox was installed . it`s no wonder 3.6 was buggy .
this is also why you could not find 3.5 in the package manager. i hope this helps !
