HP 2157us laptop - no audio after new installation of 9.10

Asked by pssl220

I created a Dual Boot system on my HP DV6 2157us laptop (windows 7 and ubuntu 9.10)

Every thing seems OK but I do not get any sound in ubuntu.

I look around for some answers. Tried the gnome mixer and verified that the master was not muted and played around with these settings but still not sound.

I tried to upgrade the alsa driver to 1.0.22 but the driver did not update, only the library version and utilities version updated. The http://monespaceperso.org link was not working so I followed instructions from
http://www.webupd8.org/2009/08/how-to-upgrade-to-alsa-1020-on-ubuntu.html

After trying some other things I reformated the linux partitions and re-installed 9.10 but I still have the problem, so I am hoping I can get some help.

Bellow is the output from the troubleshooting guide after I re-installed 9.10.

The ALSA solution is the correct route for getting sound working. Not sure if you used the script referred to at the bottom of the page (script is at http://www.webupd8.org/2009/08/alsa-upgrade-script-for-debian-ubuntu.html) or painstakingly went through all the steps listed, but looked at your output file and it seemed okay to me. Also, not so sure about the 'gnome mixer' you mention... do you have a speaker icon in the upper right of your screen - on the top panel? If so, right click it and check on the 'sound preferences'. Make sure the sound isn't muted there and it is turned up sufficiently. You should have a hardware tab that will list input and output devices together, and under that there should be a 'settings for the selected device' that at least has some kind of valid output. Mine is just set for 'Analog Stereo Output', but I guess I'm trying to say it shouldn't be 'Off' or 'No valid device found' or whatever.
If none of this helps, try reinstalling with the update script. It takes a litte time and an internet connection, but it's a lot easier to install with.

I found the following link: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingSoundProblems/KarmicCaveats

based on this I went to system-> administration -> synaptic package manager
and searched for

linux-backports-modules-alsa-karmic-generic

I installed it and rebooted, the problem with sound was solved.

I wish I found this link first, it would have saved me a lot of time.

Looks like I hit the wrong button. Although I greatly appreciated Larry's suggestions, what I did to solve this problem was to install the linux-backports-modules-alsa-karmic-generic package from the synaptic package manager as described above.

Also want to say that this launchpad.net website is a great resource and the people here are very helpful and responsive.

Hi Larry

Seems the missing sound is a MAJOR problem with Ubuntu 9.10. Check out the Forums!

I have gone through all the instructions entering code into the console (a very NON Friendly Newbie method - I even had to buy a magazine to learn some of the missing commands) with no result. I have now tried your method using the Synaptic Package Manager (a much friendlier method for Newbies), but still with no result.

I am wondering a) if the Ubuntu developers are aware of this problem and b) if there will ever be a simple "Update" solution for this problem?

Ubuntu 10.04 is just about to come out and 9.10 is still not finished!

By the way, do you know how to contact the Developers?

Note: I believe that this problem alone will set Linux back maybe 10 years for acceptance by Newbies who are looking for a simple Desktop as an alternative to Windows (eg. click and paste everything). Ubuntu 9.04 was THERE, but now 9.10 is NOT.

A plea for help and a gripe at the Ubuntu developers - Thanks for your "simple solution" instead of a long list of code to be entered in a console.

I have a Creative Soundblaster 5.1 card in my computer at present. I have tried ESS1969, ES1371 and my recent RealTek HD Audio (Model?) cards. None of these have worked in Ubuntu 9.10.
