1) You can load a 32 bit version if you want to. It will still work.

2) Do you want Ubuntu with Xfce or Xubuntu, which is related to Ubuntu and has Xfce?

Ubuntu here: http://www.ubuntu.com/

Xubuntu here: http://www.xubuntu.org/

Get the Desktop (LiveCD) disk

Thank you very much,

I will go ahead and use the 32 bit version then.

Regarding the Xubuntu vs ubuntu with Xfce I am not sure what will work best for me as I am pretty new to this.
In my Case I am running a 64 bit i-7 quad core @ 2.8 GHz and 3 Gb memory.
I would like to use dual monitors at their native resolution 1680 x 1050 with an Nvidia card that I have currently installed.

regarding typical software use I mainly want to use (aside from basic web browsing and e-mail):

latex
some Latex editor that has a nice interface
matlab
and open office

basically based on these needs I am unsure what will be better? what are the advantages disadvantages of the two choices presented above.

Slash,

A 64bit version is also available. With 3GB of memory though, 32bit might give you less "issues."

http://www.xubuntu.org/get

Choose a mirror, scroll down the list until you see xubuntu-9.10-desktop-amd64.iso or get the trorrent file xubuntu-9.10-desktop-amd64.iso.torrent

Good luck,
George
