Ihave completely lost Synaptic Package Manager. How to reinstall?

Asked by Homer Gilbert

In trying to correct an error in update manager I lost the whole package, I think. When I do sudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list, I get a blank screen in the terminal window. There are no lines to edit. How can I reinstall Synaptic Package Manager. I have only been using Ubuntu 7.04 for a few weeks and am pretty dumb. I have the CD. I was originally trying to correct an error that croped up after trying to download some DVD codecs. The error message was "E: Type --16:55:53-- is not known on line 1 in source list /etc/apt/sources.list.dmedibuntu.list,
E: The list of sources could not be read.

I think you may have accidentally deleted your sources.list - No worries though, you should be able to restore it quite easily.

What version of Ubuntu are you running?

Cheers

Chris

Press 'Alt' and 'F2' then type sudo gedit to run the text editor - copy and paste the text below into a file at /etc/apt/sources.list (the text below is for the Brit repositories)

Then run a sudo apt-get update to update your system.

Chris

Once you've done what Chris suggested above simply open a terminal and type in: sudo apt-get install synaptic

I copied and pasted in text editor per instructions but got a permission denied message when I tried to save as /etc/apt/sources.list. Tell me how to and where to save this file. What should I name the file?

Hi, Homer - You need to make sure you edit it as root - that means launching the text editor gedit in this manner if you're having problems the other way.

open a terminal window - Applications > Accessories > Terminal
type 'sudo gedit'
type your password
edit the file and save

It should work.
