Asked by Derek

Xsane In Karmic Koala 9.10 shows the following error when OCR is selected in Viewer on scanned image of text.

"Failed to execute OCR command: gocr
No such file or directory"

I have no problems with copying or scanning pictures with Canon D660 scanner

Type "gocr" in a terminal.
I get:
 Optical Character Recognition --- gocr 0.46 20081022
 Copyright (C) 2001-2008 Joerg Schulenburg
released under the GNU General Public License
 use option -h for help

What did you get ?

Thank you delance for your solution to my query.

Being a naive new comer to Ubuntu I expected a software package like
XSane to be complete and would include the OCR software. Have now
downloaded and installed gocr but am less than impressed with its
performance. So will need to fire up Windows to use Caere Omnipage,
supplied with Canon scanner, with its check and edit facility for OCR
tasks.

I'm on the whole impressed with Ubuntu and use it for most off line and
on line work.

Thanks once more and apologies for delay in answering.

Hi,

Using the Xsane - I scan and try to perform the OCR, it gives me a .txt which when opened is really just nonsense.
Any ideas on how to improve?
I am using the Ubuntu 12.04

Thanks

I find a free online ocr http://www.online-code.net/ocr.html to convert image to text.
