Thank you for your help.
And I notice this option,But I only can set resolution in there ,such as 800*600,I couldn't find where I can set x16 or x32.

I guess it might depend on the driver you're using for your video device. On my system, launching the proprietary (nvidia) configuration utility, I can change the color depth in "Xserver Display Configuration" -> "X screen" -> Color depth.

Thanks very much for your info ,And I try this again ,still have some
questions.Sorry for my poor knowledge about Ubuntu system.

(1)in my host machine(Ubuntu 9.10),I using ATI display driver,But I couldn't
find where I can set color depth with Xserver ,Below system /preferences,I
can find ATI control center, open it ,But there is not the "Xserver Display
Configuration" option.

(2)I google the info like below:
edit /etc/X11/xorg.conf Go down to the Screen Section and find the line that
says "Default Depth" Then Just change that number to what you want. Save,
log out and restart X by <Ctrl><Alt><Backspace>
But following it ,I set Defult Depth = 16,But the Xserver fail to restart,I
have to enter recovery mode to move it back.

(3)I have a Ubuntu 9.10 VM base on my host, unfortunately,I even cound't find
the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file in the Guest.
