Cursor Freezes on UBUNTU 9.10

Asked by Baihaki

Sorry, I'm very new to Linux.
Ubuntu 9.10 loads up OK, shows the desktop and I can move the cursor around the screen OK until I select anything, then everything freezes.
I tried to use one suggestion from your database, which involves adding "nohz=off" at the end of a menu line in GRUB, but unfortunately the GNU GRUB version I have is 1.97 beta4, so I'm not sure where to put it.
My computer is an HP Compaq with an Intel Pentium Dual Core E2140 @1.60GHz with 4 GB of RAM.
Assistance would be very much appreciated.

How do you unfreeze it?

Thanks for your response. The simple answer is that I cannot. Ctrl-alt-del does not work as the keyboard is also frozen, so the only way of doing it is to switch off at the mains.

You aren't running Lucid? It sounds like the Plymouth bug.

If you are using Intel Video Card, look up this bug #492271. I feel I had this problem after upgrade to 9.10. Workaround was (1) edit compiz-manager file to set compiz_name="metacity" using recovery mode (2) Preferences-->Appearance-->Visual Effects = None. I can not get compiz effects but otherwise the system works. I am waiting for this bug resolution, else I might try a diferent video card.

Can you help with this problem?
