Wireless wi-fi dongle
The hardware switch for my on-board wi-fi is "broken" in the off position so I cannot turn on wi-fi when I am outside my home (where I used a wired connection).
This is becoming an issue.
I've tried two different dongles, and with the second spent time at Free Geek trying to get the supposed-
Recommendations?
(I say broken whereas I have a hunch it was disconnected when a service shop replaced the bios battery last year and left something unconnected when he put the laptop back together - there is no resistence in the switch, it's "floppy" side-to-side. But buying a dongle would probably be cheaper than paying for someone to look inside.)
Any A+ heros here willing to look inside and reconnect my switch?
Miss you all.
Randy

Oh dear.
No recommendations, even after 2 weeks.
Sigh.

You sort of answered your own question. A service tech will vastly exceed the cost wi-fi dongle.
This inexpensive USB dongle works in Ubuntu 16.04 without the need for additional drivers and is available locally : http://
Cheers,
Randall.

Under -> Settings -> Network I see my wired connection, I see the onboard wireless which I can't activate because it has been physically switched off, and Network Proxy.

Hi Manfred,
Here's the terminal session.
Still not working. See errors below in bold.
I really appreciate your help Manfred. I've been spinning in circles for months around this issue and this is the third dongle I've tried. When Randall recommended this one as basically plug and play I was a happy camper.
Thanks
Randy

Alas, we believe the issue is hardware. Sat with Kim tonight at Free

The wifi dongle was also plugged in and showed as hardware blocked.
I'll be going to the Hackery I guess. Perhaps they can reconnect the
internal hardware switch which seems to be the source of the wifi woos.
Thanks for your help.

The compilation error has been experienced also by other persons and it has already been reported as Bug #1637059
If the root cause is a problem with the hardware switch, then I do not see any possibility to repair it by software.
Can you help with this problem?
Provide an answer of your own, or ask Randy Mentor for more information if necessary.
