Inuktitut in two dialects, in roman orthography and syllabic

Asked by Thomassie Mangiok

I have been talking with organizations that will be supporting the major task of translating Ubuntu to Inuktitut, but we face a few challenges that we can fortunately and easily resolve. Inuit in Nunavik and Inuit in Nunavut have have their own dialects, clearly distinct from each other although we can understand each other in conversations. I have been in contact with an organization in Nunavut willing to support our project if we are willing to work with them, so Ubuntu will need to be available in their dialect as in ours.

Another issue we have to think of is there are a certain number of Inuit who cannot read nor write in Syllabic, so I would like to make Ubuntu available in roman orthography as well. Text in syllabic are easier to read but I would like to be considerate.

My questions are:
1. Can we be assigned to work on "Inuktitut Nunavut" and "Inuktitut Nunavik"?
2. Or can you allow us to work on "Inuktitut Nunavut Syllabic", "Inuktitut Nunavut Roman" "Inuktitut Nunavik Syllabic" and "Inuktitut Nunavik Roman"?

If it is too much to as, the first request will suffice.

Thank you

Hi,

apologies for the late reply.
Unfortunately Launchpad at the moment supports only one Inuktitut language: the one with ISO code "iu". There is no support for other language dialects.

Hi Thomassie,

What I would recommend, in order not to block on the discussion, is to pick up the standard or more widely used variant, and start translating Ubuntu in that one.

Here's how you can get started:

Cheers,

Thank you, someone familiar with all dialects in our whole region was assigned by our school board. I believe we are on the right path now, I suppose we can always update translations.

Have a nice day
