Request for becoming administrator of Ubuntu Basque Translators team

Asked by Oier Mees

Hello,
I want to become administrator of the Ubuntu Basque Translators team https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-l10n-eu . This are the facts:
a)I have tried for over to 2 months to join and to contact the team administrator, Mikel Pascual Aldabaldetreku (https://launchpad.net/~mpascual), unsuccessfully.
b) The team has not accepted any new members in the last 3 years.
c) In mid January there were 25 pending request for joining the team, the ones that were accumulated in the past 3 years, which got rejected without communicating them any reason.
d) I have sent 6-7 mails to the team administrator to try to clarify the matter and to get accepted in the team in order to help with translations but I have stil not received any response.
Taking this facts into account I would like to become the administrator in order to avoid this problems in the future. Besides, I already have some experience because I administer the Launchpad Basque Translators team(https://launchpad.net/~lp-l10n-eu)
Regards,
Oier

Hi Mikel,

I hope you are well.

I'm contacting you as the current coordinator of the Ubuntu Basque
translation team regarding an issue affecting the team as explained
here: https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu-translations/+question/103828

Oier is raising some concerns about the way the team works and its
current inactivity. He is offering his help to collaborate on this and
would like to step forward to revive and lead the team.

Would you mind sharing your thoughts on this by replying to the support
request at
https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu-translations/+question/103828?

@Oier: my only concerns are that you seem to be quite new in Ubuntu
translations (your Launchpad account is from 2010-01-16). While this
shouldn't be an impediment, I think it would be useful if you could get
some support from other contributors to back your request. Perhaps
someone from the Basque LoCo, or some other Basque translator?

I'd also like to make sure you've read the basic documentation for team
coordinators to be aware of:

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Translations/KnowledgeBase/TeamCoordinatorResponsibilities
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Translations/Upstream#UbuntuTranslator

I can confirm what Oier says, as I also have tried to collaborate translating Ubuntu to Basque, but I got no response from the team coordinators. I wouldn't complain if they had told me I can't join the team for a concrete reason, but they just ignored my petition as they did with all the others.

I've translated lots of applications to Basque (a few in Launchpad), I'm member of the group that translates, among other things, Mozilla software, so I think that at least I deserved a reply.

And I wouldn't complain if Basque translation of Ubuntu was perfect, but now, for example, basic actions like "Cancel" and "Cut" have no translation! I'm sure Basque team needs more help translating Ubuntu, and I don't understand why coordinators don't accept new translators.

I've talked with Oier and I know that his intention is to solve this problem, creating the team according to the translation capability of each volunteer.

It would be great if Mikel would decide to help Oier and strengthen the localization team.

I have read the documentation and think that I am ready to take this step. My only intention is to contribute to Ubuntu and I would be happy just by being a mere translator. However, the encountered obstacles have led me to take this option into account.
I would be grateful if Mikel could shed some light on the issue.

Thanks Ibai and Oier for the input.

I've contacted Mikel again. Let's wait until next week to give him some more time before any role reassignment.

After receiving no reply from Mikel, and following the role reassignment policy, I've now requested Oier to be appointed as the new owner of the team.

You can subscribe to https://answers.launchpad.net/launchpad-registry/+question/105179 to keep track of when the change takes place.

Oier,

Congratulations on becoming the new Basque team coordinator. You should now be able to consider and accept new team members. You might find the info here useful as a guideline:

  https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Translations/KnowledgeBase/AssessingNewTeamMembers

When you've got time, could you look at the steps listed in the "After the team has been accepted" section in https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Translations/KnowledgeBase/StartingTeam as well? If you've got any questions in translating Ubuntu, feel free to ask on the translators list.

Happy translating!
