Problem with Realtek RTL8723BE HP 15 Notebook PC

Asked by teresavet

I recently bought a HP Notebook 15 laptop, with a wifi adapter Realtek RTL8723BE. I've read that this notebook and wifi is supported by Canonical, and it shoud work, but it doesn't. I just get wifi signal if I'm sitting just next to my modem. I've tried all the software solutions posted in the community, without solving my problem. I've learned that my next step is to open my computer and change the antenna, but, I really don't feel capable of this.
There isn't really any solution for this?
I'm surprised both Canonical and Hp say this laptop works, when it just doesn't.
Sorry for my english, and thanks for your answer!

Hi!

Did you buy this laptop with a certified version of Ubuntu pre-installed on it?

As I understand, your device is probably this one:

http://www.ubuntu.com/certification/hardware/201409-15505/

As you can see, it requires a specific version of Ubuntu pre-installed by the manufacturer (HP).

Here is a FAQ that contains more information on this:
FAQ #2219: “What's the difference between Certified (Pre-Installed) and Certified?”.

No, it's not a preinstalled version, but it's a Christmas gift and I can't
change it or give it back. Were can I download the compatible version of
Ubuntu?
Thank you Pierre!

You can try contacting HP and check if you can get a version of the image for your device.

One of my colleagues pointed out there is a Launchpad issue open for a similar problem:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1461174

In comment #20, one of the engineers provides a .deb package you can try to update your system. Please also check the other comments as people have suggested a few additional things as well.

Also, did you try with the latest version of Ubuntu (15.10), or with the LTS version (14.04)?

Hi!
I've tried de .deb package you told me, but it doesn't work for me, it
gives me errors. And the wifi still doesn't work, it has signal, but if I
step 15cm away from router looses the signal.
I'm running Ubuntu 15.10

Hi,

I'm sorry the above solution didn't work.

I'm running out of ideas on how to fix this issue.

Did you check if HP provided a BIOS update for your computer?

Also, could you try with Ubuntu 14.04? In that case, the DKMS patch from my previous comment may work.

Hope this helps!

What errors did you get?
Maybe the full error message could give a hint how to proceed further?

Thank you all for your answers. I've tried installing Ubuntu 14LTS, and
then the .deb package, and it installs ok, but wifi stills doesn't work. It
works if I stand 15cm near the router, but if I step away it disconnects.
Any other idea I can try??

wlan0 IEEE 802.11bgn ESSID:"Orange-29D8"
           ...
           Bit Rate=135 Mb/s

You might try changing your router's configuration to limit the speed to 54 Mb/s (IEEE 802.11 g) and check whether this improves the situation.

Another option is disabling certain power saving features of the driver by issuing the command

echo "options rtl8723be fwlps=0" | sudo tee /etc/modprobe.d/rtl8723be.conf
or
echo "options rtl8723be fwlps=N ips=N" | sudo tee /etc/modprobe.d/rtl8723be.conf
or
echo "options rtl8723be fwlps=0 swlps=0" | sudo tee /etc/modprobe.d/rtl8723be.conf

and then rebooting. (There are different proposals for the switches to be set.)

Hello,
the last thing I can think of is to subscribe to that bug, and check with the community [1]

Good luck.
