Feedback on the Dell Precision M4800

Asked by Robert Sedor

When doing the latest update on Ubuntu Desktop v. 12.04, it installs the latest kernel from 29 - 34. This causes an unspecified error during the update and causes a black screen. I have tried installing Ubuntu Desktop 13.10 and the same thing happens.

The difference seems to be that 12.04 will throw numerous errors when booting and 13.10 will simply black screen.

12.04 will also error during the update. 13.10 will let the update continue without error but will then black screen.

I have tried taking everything related to the kernel out of the update on the 12.04 update and have not found the magic sauce to allow it to update properly without the kernel update.

I use this for an Android build machine so this is no small problem.

Hello Robert,

Since you mentioned kernel upgrade from 29-34,
I guess it 3.8.0-29, right?

Could you try to switch to console mode by pressing
CTRL+ALT+F1
After login to you system, please run:
dmesg > dmesg.log
and attach it along with /var/log/Xorg.0.log back here.

Thanks

The packages related to the kernel say:

linux-image-generic-lts-raring-_3.8.0.34.34_amd64.deb Could not resolve
Œsecurity.ubuntu.com¹

I cannot log into the system even in recovery mode.

The error message you posted here implies that there might be a problem when your system tries to contact the server, the update is incomplete, I will suggest you to select another server, and run the update again.

Can you help with this problem?

Provide an answer of your own, or ask Robert Sedor for more information if necessary.
