newbie question

Asked by champion1

I would like to create a website using Joomla but I have no idea about setting up a sever on my existing laptop or if it's even needed.
Can anyone offer some advice or links on a step by step set up for a true beginer?
Thanks,

Sure, take a look at this tutorial which includes a screencast [1]. It explains how to get started using VirtualBox (free and opensource virtualization software) which you can install on your laptop.

If you would like to host the server in "the cloud", take a look here [2].

Hi Alon,

Thank you for your response.

I don't know what in the cloud means and I really have next to zero experience with computers.

I did read some info that made it sound like having the "server" on my laptop would be a serious security issue.

Is there a way to use Joomla to design a website that wouldn't require "adding a server" to my laptop?

Is there a way to address the security issues with the server option?

Does installing the server require reformatting my disk?

Do I need to worry about installing the server and wiping out my saved data?

I guess I'm worried about screwing up my laptop.

Thanks,

John

You pose a couple of open-ended questions, each with lots of options and each with pro's and con's.

First things first, I would recommend installing TurnKey Joomla in a Virtual Machine (see link 1 above), so you can experiment, and familiarize yourself with Joomla, and design your site without wiping your laptop. After which you can evaluate deployment options, and decide which suites your needs best.

Can you help with this problem?

Provide an answer of your own, or ask champion1 for more information if necessary.
