Location of 'Edit Task' and 'New Effort' forms on desktop

Asked by Paul Drake

Can is set the position on the desktop where the 'Edite Task' and 'New Effort' forms appear? They seem to sometimes default to top left of my desktop which is not my preference.

Hi Paul,

Task Coach should remember the last position of all edit dialogs and reuse that position. If not, that may be a bug. What version of Task Coach are you using?

Cheers, Frank

I have version 1.2.19 May 29,2011

My symptom is:
When I open the Edit Task dialog it often goes to the top left of my desktop, which is not where I would like it to be. I try moving the dialog to another location, then use either OK or Cancel to close it. The next open of this dialog is top left again.

Thanks for you quick response!
Paul

I'm sorry, but it works for me on Windows XP too. I don't think installing 1.2.20 will make a difference but you can try. Another thing to try is removing your TaskCoach.ini file. It's in C:\Documents and Settings\<your username>\Application Data\TaskCoach.

Does that help?

I think that I have uncovered the issue.
The software works as you describe when I boot my laptop with it docked and using two monitors. When I move to Standby mode, then undock for meetings, and then return to Standby mode and redock, that is when the dialogs start moving to the top left.

Can you think of what might be changing when I go from two monitors to one and back to two that would reset the position of the dialogs?
Thanks so much for your attention.

Paul

Hi Paul,

The multimonitor setup and standby mode may have something to do with it yes. When Task Coach tries to place an edit dialog at a certain position it checks whether it can actually find the window. If not, the window is probably placed off screen (e.g. on a second monitor that is now turned off or whatever) and Task Coach moves the window to the upper left corner. So, apparently after the standby the position where Task Coach tries to open the dialog is not on your screen and Task Coach moves it to the upper left corner. However, if you then move it to another position, close it and open another dialog (for the same type of object) it should appear on the position where you closed the previous one. Is that what you see?

Thanks, Frank

Hi Frank,
Thanks again for the quick response.
To answer your question, no. Once Task Coach gets the "top left" position set, moving the window will not change it until I close Task Coach and then reopen.

I'm afraid there is not much we can do then because Task Coach simply asks Windows whether the window is at a valid position, unless Jérôme knows a solution. I'll assign this problem to him.

I'll take a look. Doesn't seem to be related to standby mode; I can reproduce this by just unplugging and replugging a monitor.
