Integration of TaskCoach with Mozilla Thunderbird

Asked by Mauricio

Dear sirs:

I have been trying to integrate my e-mail (Mozilla Thunderbird) with TaskCoach, I am trying with the "drag and Drop" procedure, but it does not seem to be working. Nothing is shown in the tasks to which I have attached some e-mails. ¿What could be happening?

I have open my e-mail client (Thunderbird) and a specific task (in the attachments window) in task coach, I select one of my e-mails, dragged and dropped it on the attachments window of a specific task without any problem, warning or error message, but at the end, nothing has happened the e-mail has never been attached to my task.

Thanks in advance for your cooperation.

Kinf regards.

We have had issues for a while with Thunderbird and drag-and-drop not working. I'll look into it again. What version of Thunderbird are you using on what platform?

The plan is to release 1.2.7 this coming weekend. In the mean time, you can download a recent build to test the fix. See http://www.fraca7.net/TaskCoach-packages/latest_bugfixes.py (under the Release1_2_Branch heading).

Still does not work for me. Although the "+"-Sign is next to the mouse pointer before dropping.

I'm going to do some serious refactoring this week-end and test all platforms.

Still the same issue: the "+" sign next to the mouse while dropping, but nothing gets attached to my Task Coach database/task.

BTW, do you use Thunderbird profiles ? IMAP or POP ? Through SSL ?

POP3, partly with SSL.

Also note that the fix for drag and drop from Thunderbird in release 1.2.7 is not working correctly. Can you download a recent build from http://www.fraca7.net/TaskCoach-packages/latest_bugfixes.py (under the Release1_2_Branch heading) and see whether that helps?

Just installed 1.2.8.
Dragging and dropping now work. But now there is a problem with the charset. It says "UTF8"..
Can't Task Coach handle UTF8?

Can you be more precise? Who says "UTF8"? What kind of error message do you get exactly? Thanks, Frank

After dropping and double-clicking the mail (includes one answer) in Task Coach I get the text below. With the message from Launchpad it works although it is UTF 8 too. So there is another problem here..

Special characters like Ü, Ä, ß etc. are not displayed correctly..

Content-Type: text/plain; charset="UTF-8"; format=flowed

That's because the message was transfered as a multipart MIME message. Task Coach does not try to parse MIME parts.

Ok, but isn't it the usual case to have multiple messages in one?

Not really. Outlook really abuses this.

Here you have it. Multiple messages are not needed...

Special characters seem to be a problem...Look what your name has become...

Yes, Outlook also abuses this kind of encoding, presuming that other MUAs wouldn't understand Unicode, I guess. Working around the various quirks of Outlook would basically amount to re-implementing a mail user agent, which is no feat, and would produce more bugs than it would solve problems...

I don't understand you. Thunderbird reads this Unicode message without problems.

"Outlook also abuses this kind of encoding." What kind of encoding?

EDIT:
I just found out, that TB obviously already stores the information wrong. In the source code of the last message your name is already wrong: "J=C3=A9r=C3=B4me", but viewing the message in TB it is all correct. So it doesn't happen while importing. :(

Jérôme Laheurte (fraca7) said :

Yes, that's what I mean. Outlook uses an outdated way of encoding non-ASCII characters; most MUAs, including Thunderbird, are able to recognize this and decode it in order to display it correctly. But it's a *lot* of work. And error prone.
