Bug #1180493

Asked by Peter Gladstein

Hello,

I am the author of this bug. I just installed 0.12.2RC1. I noticed that the View Control Panel has been corrected in that DSO has replaced Nebulas. However, the Main Tool Bar still displays Nebulas instead of DSO. This is confusing and incorrect. Please remedy.

Thanks for your hard work.

Pete

I updated those tooltips but possible some users will be confused because tooltips included into shortcuts settings file. If this file not will be updated then tooltips will be old.

P.S. Changes: http://bazaar.launchpad.net/~stellarium/stellarium/trunk/revision/6126

Sorry for my bad English. Fixation has been applied but theoretically some peoples will be having troubles if users not updates shortcuts settings.

My recommendation:

View Window - Change DSO in "Labels and Markers" and "Limit Magnitudes" to
DSOs since DSO is not plural.

Main Toolbar - Change Tooltip to "DSOs [D]. Also, change Display Options
in Help.

Update Readme to reflect changes for legacy customers. Also, you might
consider accepting both "D" and "N" for the keyboard shortcut.

I just installed 0.12.2 RC2. Thanks for changing DSO to DSOs for "Labels and Markers" and "Limit Magnitudes". However, the Main Toolbar needs to be changed too. Currently, the Tooltip displays "Nebulas [N]". This is confusing. The Tooltip should display "DSOs [D]". Thanks.

It say "Deep-sky objects" but you still use old shortkeys file.

The Tooltip in the Main Tool Bar displays "Nebulas [N]". See attachment.
The Tooltip should display "DSOs [D]". Also, Help should be changed too.

You need delete shortkeys.json file (look at %USERDIR%)

And this is a beautiful demonstration how changes purportedly done to benefit users actually turn out user-unfriendly because of missing infrastructure (in this case, proper version management of the shortcuts file). It's made especially beautiful by the fact that it affected immediately the one that proposed the change. Ironic, isn't it?

(It's also a demonstration of the bad design of the keyboard shortcut system. But that's to blame on another developer.)

Mr. Gladstein, I think that an easier way to reset your shortcuts file would be to choose "Reset to defaults" in the Configuration window or the analogous button in the shortcut configuration window.

And that particular term has been around for a lot of time, without anyone else complaining. A significant part of Stellarium's intended audience (students, laypeople, children) won't be instantly familiar with what "DSO" means.

Well, proper version of the shortkeys file was... missed. :(

Thanks for responding. I am not complaining. I submitted this suggestion
in the spirit of continuous improvement. Let me propose this compromise.
Please change Tooltip from "Nebulas [N]" to "Nebulas, Star Clusters &
Galaxies [N]". Thanks.

I just saw that this is still open. As of V0.13, both D and N work, with D as main shortcut. The related bug has "Fix Released".
