How to see the earth from a geostationary satellite?

Asked by Jerry

Before talk my problem. I want to thank you for your work on stellarium!

I am a new user of Stellarium. and i have used WorldWind for a very long time. So I want to see the earth like in the worldwind. Like a telescope on a satellite, and can the see earth's real surface image not the landscape, like on the other planet or moon of Stellarium.

I tried to solve it and find some related information, like "See earth from the space", https://sourceforge.net/p/stellarium/discussion/278769/thread/2ac7dc3a/, and Barry said "if you wanna see the earth from the space or somewhere, you need to created a new object in the "SSystem.ini"(Solar System)".

Then i studied the "Solar System Objects", http://www.stellarium.org/wiki/index.php/Solar_System_Objects. And i found "After version 0.10.3, Stellarium comes with the Satellites plugin which shows the positions of a number of artificial objects in Earth orbit, including the International Space Station."

So i wander if i can still edit the "SSystem.ini" to achieve my purpose, and how to do it. For example, like on a geostationary satellite.
Thanks again for your excellent job on Stellarium!

Best regards!

Satellites are not the same class of object as a SolarSystem object,
and the observer cannot be located there (not the current way it's
implemented anyway).

Thanks a lot. What a pity.
I found that Satellite and Planet are two different Objects.
So IF I made some changes to the code and press ctrl+g, and change my view to a Satellite object, is that possible?

IF you changed the code so that worked, then yes. The question is how
to do that. It basically means re-writing the satellite module.
You're very welcome to try.

Thanks for your encouragement, i am trying.
I tried another solution too.
Set a very long distance from the earth in the "Location Window". But it still displays the landscape. So I think whether we can change the display mode.
In fact, if we want to see the Earth from a satellite, maybe we only need to change the display mode, linke other app, there does not exist the concept of LANDSCAPE. In my opinion, LANDSCAPE class is a compromise for displaying the world around us, btw, I think the LANDSCAPE http://www.stellarium.org/wiki/index.php/Landscapes, are all amazing, but in the future, i think we want to the display the real earth, and created some digital object to show the real world, like the worldwind and google earth. Sorry, that is a little further topic..., ^_^...

Have you looked at Celestia? It's another open source space
simulation app, but lets you be anywhere in the solar system,
including spacecraft, or just floating around. I think it might fit
your needs better than Stellarium, which is a more traditional
planetarium style app.

Thank you, Matthew. You always answer question so fast.
I installed Celestia too.But only try it and havenot study its source code.
To me, I prefer the style of Stellarium. It is cooler ;) and looks more robust, easier to extend its function. That's why i want to do some work on it. And I hope I can do some contribution on it.

Can you help with this problem?
