loaded 17MB Vokselia sperical landscape and PC crashed. Eventually deleted but now Alt o no longer works with Telescope, eyepiece or ccd select. Uninstalling/re-installing Sterillium - no change.

Asked by CB Connor

Even after uninstalling a second time and ensuring the Stellarium directory had been deleted, downloading Stellarium again and installing this "new" file, Stellarium opened with all my personal settings intact including the 4 additional star catalogues which I believed were ONLY in the deleted Stellarium directory. The plug-in which allows any one of several choices of telescopes, eyepieces and ccd's to be used seems to have some code corrupted and as a result Ctrl o selects the first listed telescope but Alt o which then permits selection of other items in the lists of eyepieces, telescopes or ccd's, does nothing. Both these commands worked perfectly before I loaded the Voksenlia ZIP file. All my added items (eyepieces, telescopes etc.) were retained after the re-installations as were my location and other personal selections which suggests the uninstall operation did not uninstall everything and also retained whatever corruption loading this large Voksenlia landscape caused! I have not been able to locate where those files are located and even if I would I be able to identify and correct errors in them? I have not identified any other problems but would dearly like to find the cause and solution to this (small) one.

I have to add, as a newcomer to Stellarium, that I find this a truly superb programme and salute the originators and maintainers of it for their enormous efforts in providing such powerful yet extremely user-friendly piece of astronomical software. I hope my problem can be easily resolved (perhaps it is already known) but in any case I look forward to a reply and any help which can be offered.

Kind regards,

Chris Connor.

User-specific settings, landscapes, star catalogues, etc. are stored in Stellarium's user data directory. Its exact location depends on the operating system. Here's a list:
http://www.stellarium.org/doc/0.11.0/fileStructure.html

I assume that you are running some version of Windows. On Windows XP, the path to the user data directory is something like:
C:\Documents and Settings\YOURUSERNAME\Application Data\Stellarium

On Windows Vista and Windows 7, it should be something like:
C:\Users\YOURUSERNAME\AppData\Roaming\Stellarium

The landscapes are in the "landscapes" sub-directory. To remove a landscape, simply delete its folder.

Anyway, installing a landscape shouldn't break the Oculars plug-in. Could you please try again to access the Oculars menu with Alt+o and then look at Stellarium's log file for anything suspicious? The log is accessible through the "Last run log" shortcut in Stellarium's Start menu folder. The original file is in the user data directory. :)

It may be possible that the Oculars plug-in configuration file has become corrupted during the crash. You can reset Oculars' settings by deleting the "Oculars" sub-directory of the "modules" sub-directory of the user data directory. :)

Dear Bogdan,

Thank you for your really speedy responses! I followed your suggestions to
my best ability with the following results:

1. I could not find the "Last run log" file you mentioned. A search on my
Windows 7 PC (A Sony Vaio VPCZ13C5E with a 2.8 GHz Intel core I7 processor,
8 GB RAM and a 128 GB SSD) for this file, pointed to the Log.txt file in the
user ... Roaming ... Stellarium subdirectory so I am not sure this is the
correct one from your first E-mail and is probably the "original" log file.

2. When I checked the Ocular.ini file Alt o (for pop-up navigator) was set
to shift o! When I deleted this file as you suggested the "new" version had
the correct key combinations.

3. When I tried using these keys only Ctrl o worked as before but, by chance
I exited FULL SCREEN mode and found that Alt o provided a sub menu for
selecting a sensor BEFORE Ctrl o was used and after it was used Alt o
provided a sub menu for the remaining options. I could select a sensor or
telerad from the first menu and toggle the crosshairs from these menus but
those key commands still did not work. If I used the windows "maximise"
icon (Top right of window) to maximise the screen (thus leaving the Task Bar
along the bottom) the Alt o worked as for the exited full screen using the
Stellarium f11 function key. Using f11 to toggle back Full Screen again
inhibited key operations except Ctrl o.

I had NOT tried the non-full screen set-up before I deleted the Ocular.ini
file so I cannot be sure whether what I described above would also have
worked in that situation. So while I have a work around which is not too
big a pain there are still some oddities for which I don't have a solution.
Is it the case that when performing an uninstall using the windows 7
"add-remove programmes" facility that the User directories for Stellarium
are intentionally NOT erased so that all the user settings and (compatible?)
additions are retained and used for a new installation whether it is an
earlier, later or just the same version? If that's so then maybe I can
return to the "unadulterated" Stellarium situation by manually deleting all
of these directories, sub directories and files BEFORE doing a
re-installation. I note that there is what looks like an unins000.exe file
in the Stellarium directory under Program Files (X86) in my PC. Maybe using
that file removes everything. I also noted from the original log.txt file
that it stated "Unsupported Windows Version" for my PC and wonder if that
may be significant! I would very much appreciate any comments on the above
(e.g. before I try the manual deletion etc.) and again look forward to your
response.

I will happily settle for the "work around" solution for the present if you
wish and will enter that in the appropriate part of the Launchpad
accordingly to close my query but it would be nice to be able to tie off the
loose ends if a "proper" re-installation can be done by manually deleting
the Stellarium User ... directories but I'm not sure if these are the only
ones! I know I will have to download the 4 additional star catalogues again
and enter all my "personal" settings etc. but that's a price well worth
paying to get back to square 1. I could probably save the catalogue files
to a temporary location and just copy them back to the 'new' Stellarium User
area. Incidentally, can you explain why the 4 directories data, landscapes,
modules and stars appear in BOTH the User area and in the Program
Files\Stellarium area? Is it perhaps that the Program Files Stellarium
directory is updated with an upgrade or new installation while the User area
remains to preserve User settings? This may answer my query as to why the
re-installation still preserves the "corruption(s)" but it would seem in
that case there must be some interchange between the related directories to
avoid confusion so I'm not sure if what I concluded makes sense!

Thank you again, Bogdan, and I look forward to receiving your response.

Kind regards,

Chris Connor.

You have found out the log file correctly. "Last run log" is the name of the shortcut (icon) in the Start Menu, though I think that in Windows 7, the Start Menu is not structured the same way as in Windows XP.

When Stellarium looks for a file, it looks for it in the user data directory first, and then in the installation directory. That's why both directories have approximately the same structure.

The default Stellarium uninstaller deletes only the installation directory in "Program Files". To make a complete uninstall, you need to delete the user data directory in "Roaming". That should be the only other place where Stellarium files are stored. The reason it is not deleted on uninstall is partially a design decision, partially a limitation of the program used to generate the installer/uninstaller.

You can preserve the star catalog files you have downloaded by moving the "stars" sub-directory of the user data directory before deleting it, and then moving "stars" back in it after it has been re-generated the next time you run Stellarium. Stellarium will detect automatically the catalogs.

Here's the page of the Oculars plug-in in the Stellarium Wiki:

Thank you, Bogdan, most of my questions are now answered, though deleting the User directories as well as the Program Files directories for Stellarium and successfully performing a completely new installation unfortunately still did not correct whatever corruption was caused, resulting in several of the Ocular key commands not working in Full Screen. Since I can, however, still achieve full use of the Ocular commands and then switch back to Full Screen, I believe my problem can be considered solved.

I hope I can find the reason and solution as to why these Ocular key commands no longer work and that the original corruption has not caused other problems not yet discovered. Since my problems arose only after trying to install the Vokselia landscape ZIP file it may be wise to have some specialist examine the possibility that this Landscape may cause problems to others and if so to propose a solution. I have no idea why this file should have caused the problems I experienced but it may have been one of those obscure conflicts which occur in certain PC's with particular hardware/software combinations.

Thank you again for you prompt and useful help,

Kind regards,

Chris Connor.
