use stellarium images in a publication

Asked by Charlotte Hardy

I am working on a publication for 2012. The images of star placements etc would be helpful to illustrate my points. May I have permission to do this?

Thank you!

Disclaimer: I am not a lawyer.

No problem at all for the star positions and constellation lines. If your screenshots include nebula images that might be less clear as some of them are licensed as public domain (which doesn't exist in some countries, like Germany), and some are licensed as "Free for non-commercial use". Some of the images require attribution, as do the screenshots in general.

See the README file for full details.

As far as attribution is concerned, a link to http://stellarium.org/ on the copyrights page of your book would be very welcome, although just naming the project is probably enough.

Others have already done this. I saw a Philips Pocket Sky Guide in a local shop which had screenshots from Stellarium, so their publishers were obviously OK with it :-)

I would only be using screen shots of the star positions, so I gather from your
answer that is allowed?

Reading readme's is like PTSD from reading double negative income tax codes. If
I asked 3 other people I might get 3 different answers!

Thanks

I'm confident that if your images don't contain nebula images or milky way image, there is no problem.

P.S. If you press ctrl+t you to toggle the toolbars. Might be helpful for you. :)
