Stellarium won't start in Ubuntu

I installed Stellarium on my portable computer running Ubuntu 10.10 -Pentium 4 and Radeon Video card

this is what the log tells me when I run it
The program hardly even starts before crashing.

Using default graphics system specified at build time: raster

Annullato
I trie uninstalling and installing again but with no luck.
Must say I'm on a wireless connection and the connection was lost the first time I tried to install from the repository.

You have ugly video drivers, please try install proprietary drivers.

Also can try a start Stellarium with --safe-mode key from CLI (command-line)

tried downloading from Ubuntu repository the ATI radeon driver (fglrx) but
now I get a segmentation error during startup and nothing happens just as
before.

There are at least one defect here, and one in Ubuntu, regarding issues with that video driver.

Can you help with this problem?
