Asked by Joseph Hughes

NOAA satellites 15,17,18 coordinates don't agree owith Noaa 15,17,18 coordinates from
http://www.n2yo.com/whats-up/?c=w.

ISS ZARYA coordinates agree withhttp://www.n2yo.com/whats-up/?c=w.

Noaa satellite coordinates either lag in time or are incorrect. IE Noaa 15 from Stellarium are RA11h7 DEC-17 28. Coordinates for same date and time from http://www.n2yo.com/whats-up/?c=w are RA 5h38 DEC+21 33

Also NOAA 18 from Stellarium are RA9h9 Dec-55 31. For same date and time coordinates from http://www.n2yo.com/whats-up/?c=w are RA2h30 dec-63 19 .

ISS Zarya coordinates from Stellarium agree with coordinates from http://www.n2yo.com/whats-up/?c=w for date and time 8/10/2010 10:35pm EST. Noaa satellites position could have bug

Stellarium updates its satellites data from the on-line database at celestrak.com. It updates them automatically every 72 hours, but you can manually force an update from the settings window of the Satellites plug-in.

It is possible that your Stellarium has old data (you can try forcing an update).
It is possible that n2yo.com has old data.

You can try to compare them with http://heavens-above.com

I manually forced an update from the settings of the Satellite plugin, but
nothing was updated. The NOAA 15,17,and 18 satellites still disagree with
n2yo.com.

The HST,ENVISAT, CO-55,ISS ZARYA  all agree with n2yo.com.

n2yo.com  has no record of GENESIS,RS 15, AO-27, CO-56,UARS or SEASAT
satellites.

I could not find any listings for the NOAA satellites on the
http://heavens-above.com webpage.

I previously wrote n2yo.com had no record in their database for SEASAT,UARS,GENESIS 1/2,RS15,AO27,CO56

I just received email from n2yo.com .They now have these satellites in their database.

I looked them up and compared them to the coordinates on Stellarium.org
Results: If n2yo.com agree/disagree with Stellarium

GENESIS1/2 agree
SEASAT 1 agree
UARS agree
AO27 disagree
RS 15 disagree
CO 56 decayed -no track

NOAA 15,17, 18 do not agree after manual update

OK, it seems to be some kind of bug in the Satellites plug-in: the TLEs of some satellites are not updated for some reason. The reason the positions don't match is that the data is old. I will file a bug report.

Meanwhile, you can update them *very* manually:

1) Get a decent programming text editor, such as Notepad++ (it's free - http://notepad-plus-plus.org/ )
2) Find your user data directory: http://www.stellarium.org/doc/head/fileStructure.html
3) Inside it, there should be a "modules" directory, and inside that directory, a "Satellites" directory
4) Open with Notepad++ the "satellites.json" file that is in the "Satellites" directory
5) Find the NOAA entries. You can copy the new TLE elements from any source you want, such as:
http://celestrak.com/NORAD/elements/noaa.txt
6) Save the file and start Stellarium.
7) If Stellarium doesn't start, delete the "satellites.json" file - it will be restored on start-up.

I copied the Kep elements from the celestrak.com/NORAD/elements/noaa.txt file
and pasted them into satellites.json.

Everything works fine.      NOAA 15,17,18 now agree with the coordinates from
n2yo.com.

Thank you very much Mr. Marinov for everything you have done.

 Have a great day.  JHughes

Hi Joseph. We've now released a new version of Stellarium. This release contains an updated satellites.json file with more satellites which have current IDs, so hopefully they will get updated now if they weren't before.

If the problem was with the downloading of the TLE elements, e.g. you must use a proxy server (which Stellarium does not yet support), you can now update from a local file... so the manual route is a little less painful here - just download the TLE .txt files from celestrak.com with your web browser through the proxy and then update them from the satellites plugin configuration dialog (alt-Z to display this).

I hope that answers your question. The status was still "open", although I think that was just launchpad automatically re-opening it because of the last post.

Cheers
Matthew

Dear Mr. Gates,
In response to your email I entered the
http://www.celestrak.com/NORAD/elements/noaa.txt file into the source satellite
configuration page .I then clicked the UPDATE NOW button . All the NOAA
satellites were updated. Evidently, the bug has been corrected and the program
works great. Thanks for all your help. Have a nice holiday.

To anyone who received email supposedly from my desk that said something
like-Wow,you have got to see this- or something like it,please be notified that
I did not send it.I don't have any idea who did send it ,but be assured it did
not come from me.

I did  download Windows Live, and perhaps they sent it out automatically when I
downloaded Windows Live mail.In any event ,I did not send it and I will try to
find out where it came from.

I have been getting other people's email and have other problems with email and
will make every attempt to see that this does not happen in the future.

If anyone gets any questionable email from  me,please notify me immediately.

To anyone who does not recognize me,it is possible because I am using contacts
from my mother,Rita Hughes, files because she has all the family email addresses
and I inadvertently  copied other email addresses from that file that she had
that are not members or friends of her family.

Please forgive any inconvenience this may have caused you.JHughes
