Program is not opening and running correctly

Asked by Deb Duxbury

I am on windows xp system. When Stellarium is opened no program is seen. The screen is just black with white squiggle lines. Hitting delete or ESC buttons does not exit the screen. The only way to get rid of it is to hard boot system. I see no menu option or anything I recognize as a program. I have installed and uninstalled program twice (selecting the windows download option) with same result. Could you please advise how I get Stellarium's program to run on my system? I thank you for your time and assistance.

Matthew,
The F11 key allows me to shrink box to click X and close, thank you. I do
not know what log.txt file is. I've enclosed a screen shot of what the
program screen looks like. Please advise where I find the requested log.txt
and get that data to you.

Thank you for your prompt attention. I await your reply.

Since 0.10.5, the log.txt is available from the Start menu / Stellarium group with the link name "last run log".

The actual file location depends on the version of Windows you're using. Under XP I /think/ it's

c:\Documents and Settings\[yourusername]\AppData\Roaming\Stellarium\log.txt

It's what you pasted above... however what you pasted stopped apparently half way through. Maybe this is the cause of the failure to load, or maybe you didn't copy all the log file.

If you did paste the whole log file then the next messages in my (working) log.txt is plugin loading stuff.. I recommend the following:

1. Delete the folder and all it's contents:

  c:\Documents and Settings\[yourusername]\AppData\Roaming\Stellarium\

2. Run Stellarium. If it works. Great. If not then:

2a. Run Stellarium using the "Stellarium (no OpenGL 2)" shortcut in the start menu.

If it still doesn't work, I am not sure.

I copied and pasted all that was in the log.txt because you were not
receiving attached file.
You are telling me to ... remove program ... and try to run program? I'm not
sure how we got from let's sort this issue out ... to this email?

Did you want me to send over text again? What do you want me to do?
Uninstall the program? Delete a file? You've indicated no clear path of
resolution here. If you don't know to whom do I speak that would? I thank
you for your kind attention. Please let me know what steps I should take and
the processes in which they should be taken.

My instructions are:

1. Delete the folder and all it's contents:

  c:\Documents and Settings\[yourusername]\AppData\Roaming\Stellarium\

2. Run Stellarium. If it works. Great. If not then:

2a. Run Stellarium using the "Stellarium (no OpenGL 2)" shortcut in the start menu.

It does not say uninstall the program. The program is actually installed in C:\Program Files\Stellarium. The directory I am asking you to remove contains settings and other files which Stellarium creates and uses when it runs. If you do this, it helps me to zero in on the problem.

I was unable to find the folder that you reference. (c:\Documents and
Settings\[yourusername]\AppData\Roaming\Stellarium\) Perhaps this is the
cause of the problem. The program was downloaded from the following website.
http://sourceforge.net/projects/stellarium/files/Stellarium-win32/0.10.5/stellarium-0.10.5.exe/downloadand
the version is 0.10.5.

You have to substitute [yourusername] with your user name. You can actually see the path from the log details you posted, and also a sign that old configuration settings might be to blame:

*begin quote*
Attempting to use an existing older config file.
Config file is: "C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Application
Data\Stellarium/config.ini"
*end quote*

... The directory must exist for there to be an old config file in it: it is called:

C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Application Data\Stellarium

Sorry for the slight mistake. Every version of Windows uses a different path for this which is a *mighty* pain in the ass for the likes of me. Anyhow, that's the directory you should delete. P.S. Your user name is "Owner" in case you didn't know it. Presumably this is what was entered when the machine was installed.

That did not help. I think the confusion came when I removed then
reinstalled an earlier version. I have removed all of the program and
downloaded version 0.10.5. Still having the problem with the program opening
using regular and the Stellarium (no OpenGL 2) option. Still get a screen
with geometric designs and no words. any other suggestions? Thanks for all
of your help on this issue.

If a file which is needed by a plugin is missing, you would probably see a message to that effect. So we have ruled out the possibility that the old stale configuration is causing the problem (since a new fresh configuration has been created the first time you ran after deleting the directory as I requested).

The vast majority of problems like this are because the video drivers do not properly support open GL. Please check the manufacturer and model of your video card and check the driver version. There is a page on the wiki for common driver problems. You can check this to see if someone else had a similar problem and managed to fix it using a different version of the video driver:

Oh yes, also could you please attach a screen shot of what the problem looks like?

Can you help with this problem?
