siderial drive

Asked by Gene McDonald

Is it possible to move siderial drive from an alt+ key sequence to an icon on the toolbar? This is a really useful teaching tool if easily accessible.

What do you mean by "sidereal drive"?

Bogdan,

What I mean is the ability to move the sky display forward or backward by one or more siderial days, so that the motion of the sun, moon and planets over time can be seen against the background stars. On a planetarium projector this is called siderial drive (at least on the old ones), and this is very useful in teaching basic astronomy. In Stellarium's current version, this can be done but you have to use Alt+ or Alt-, and you have to dig into the documentation to figure that out. It would be nice if it made it onto the toolbar or some other accessible place in some future version.

Thanks,

Gene McDonald

There's always a battle between making features visible and keeping the interface uncluttered. Pressing F1 or clicking the help icon shows the keys list which includes this. I don't think it's so hidden, although I realize it's not immediately obvious.

Having said that Fabien's been doing work to make it possible to have alternative GUIs. Perhaps someone might want to make an alternative interface with more visible options like this. Your mission then, should you choose to accept it is to implement al alternative GUI, or persuade someone to do it. :-)
