10.4 unusable due to lines on screen

Asked by stan346

 I see the splash screen normally, then all I get are diagonal lines that criss-cross the screen.
Nothing else is visible. I cannot exit using any of the normal keys and have to reboot to get it to stop.
Running on Averatec laptop, with XP home sp3, 512 megs memory, 1.6 gig amd processor, 64 megs shared memory.
S3G video drivers, latest i can find.
I need this program to work so I can use it with my astronomy students.
Thanks

Both 0.10.3 and 0.10.4 have rendering problems on some graphics cards. This was caused by the introduction of OpenGL 2 vertex shaders - it seems that some graphics cards don't support shaders, or the support is buggy.

Please, try the following: in Stellarium's configuration file, add the following two lines under "[main]":
use_glshaders = false
use_qpaintenginegl2 = false

(On Windows XP, Stellarium's configuration file (config.ini) is easily accessible through a short-cut in Stellarium's folder in the Start menu.)

Save the changes to the file and start Stellarium. If after disabling OpenGL2 you experience problems with unreadable text, you can try downloading this community submitted patch:

I have already tried making those changes...when I reloaded stellarium,
the ini file still thinks it was 10.2?
And the changes you recommended were in there as well.
How do I delete everything from the registry that has to do with
Stellarium?
I suspect that might be the problem.
Thanks

You can post by e-mail to Launchpad, but I'm not sure that it can accept attachments and the "Questions and Answers" feature doesn't support them anyway. When you reply by e-mail, please delete the text of the original message, as it makes your message somewhat hard to read.

As far as I know, Stellarium doesn't write to the registry. All settings are stored in the configuration file. If it reports that the version is 0.10.2, then it most probably has been left over from the previous version of Stellarium. (There's a bug in 0.10.4 where the configuration file reports the version as 0.10.3.)

You can delete the old configuration file and let Stellarium re-create it with the 0.10.4 default configuration file. On Windows XP, the path to the folder that contains it is something like C:\Documents and Settings\Your User Name\Application Data\Stellarium.

Then, please make again the changes to the configuration file, run Stellarium, and copy here the contents of Stellarium's log file. (On Windows, it is accessible through a shortcut in Stellarium's Start menu folder. Look for "Last run log".)

 Okay, I deleted the old config.ini file and let it make a new one.
Then added the lines to the [Main] section. Still
the same results. Maybe worse.
Here is the text of the log file:

I'm afraid I can't offer any other advice. You can download any of the previous releases of Stellarium for Windows here:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/stellarium/files/Stellarium-win32/

Can you help with this problem?

Provide an answer of your own, or ask stan346 for more information if necessary.
