cannot connect to network

Asked by Rudy Rubin

I have Sugar running on a Vista PC with 755 persistent storage. I cannot connect to my network although I can see by the lights on my router that Sugar hits it and returns a window for entry of the 128 key. The circle that represents my network pulsates but only returns the window to reenter the key. The system never connects and I have to cancel it otherwise this window continues to return. Is there a solution for this?

Hi Rudy,

This looks like a bug. Are you able to report the wireless hardware? If it's a Broadcom wireless adapter, you may be out of luck. They don't release open source drivers.

Unfortunately, I'm from an Ubuntu background and don't know the Fedora mechanism for installing proprietary drivers into the kernel.

Hi Rudy,

yes, Tim is right, it could very well be a wireless hardware issue. Would you mind reporting your hardware profile using Smolt? The process is outlined here: http://wiki.sugarlabs.org/go/Sugar_on_a_Stick/Hardware#Next_Steps

If you posted the link to your profile, we'd be able to diagnose further. If it turns out to be a Broadcom wireless adapter, then RPM Fusion is what we'll need to consider. It provides kernel modules and drivers that are currently not in Fedora, so the (non-free) Broadcom driver lives there, too.

Anyway, this depends on what hardware you're using.

Rudy, may I ask why you set this question to open? We need to know the specifics of your hardware in order to assist further.

Thanks, Tim.

Hello Martin,
I don't but I read the marketing emails and had a question. As for my connection problem, I downloaded Linux via Fedora and it connects to my network just fine. Incidentally, I found out about sugar on a stick from my supplier in China!!
Thanks for your response, I'll just keep reading and not ask any more questions.
Regards, Rudy

If you visit this page and scroll down to where you say "Sorry I asked the question":

...perhaps you can understand why I'm a bit confused?

Still, I'm glad that Fedora connects to your network just fine - thanks for confirming this. Are you still having the problem with Sugar on a Stick?

Martin
