remote control by xdotool possible?

Asked by Andreas Heidemann

I have a brother scanner, which supports four keys at the scanner device, which can be configured to run shell scripts at the connected computer. I tried to configure one of the keys to simulate <ctrl>-1 to ease the task of scanning multi paged documents with a simple scanner. The tool I tried is named 'xdotool' - but it does not work. The key-tool for the brother scanner is named 'scan key tool'.

Is there any script controlled remote control for simple scan possible to simulate such key press events like 'scan next page' (<ctrl>-1) ?

Thanks is advance

The absence of ANY reaction is disappointing.
Nevertheless, I still need an answer.

What exactly does not work?
Does the Scankey-Tool work if you put something like

zenity --info --text="test"

in the executed command? Do you see a popup then?

---

If you manually press CTRL-1 in Simple Scan does it scan?

---

What xdotool action are you running exactly? Does this work from a terminal?

first i wish a happy x-mas to everyone!

The scankey-tool is a later problem for me, i mentioned scankey-tool only to have full context. By now, I'm trying to run xdotool from a command line (terminal) and it don't work on Simple Scan.

The xdotool documentation states: "If you are trying to send key input to a specific window, and it does not appear to be working, then it's likely your application is ignoring the events xdotool is generating. This is fairly common." So I wrote this request.

Details at http://www.semicomplete.com/projects/xdotool/xdotool.xhtml#sendevent_notes

Simple Scan itself with input from the keyboard works correct. I press ctrl-n to start a new document and ctrl-1 to start scan of a page. Multipage scans would become much easier, if I could use a button at the scanner itself, which in turn has to trigger the scan next page function of simple scan. That's why I'm looking for a tool to send keystrokes to the Simple Scan.

Some tests with xdotool & Simple Scan

I started Simple Scan to a movable small window. I startet a terminal and typed the following commandline:

$ sleep 10; xdotool getactivewindow windowmove 100 100

I then clicked on the simple scan window within 10 seconds. As a result of the xdotool the simple scan window is moved to the required position. Using the xdotool command 'key ctrl+1' instead, nothing happens. When I enter manually ctrl+1 on the keyboard, it scans perfectly. The first is an interaction with the X server, the later an interaction with the application. And there I see the problem.

Hope you can help & fix it.
Thanx in advance.
