Is this in the context of Shutter (a screenshot app) or just using gmail in
general?

yes, I only want use gmail when i want to send a screenshot directly from shutter.
at this moment when i select "send by mail" gmail is trying to send a mail but without an attaced file.

I'm using debian.

Drag and drop the image from Shutter into gmail's compose window. Then it
will attach it to the email, and your screenshot will be sent.
