Customised exports
How difficult would it be to build customised exports, i.e. select a group or section (of students), then select the data (from demographics or contacts) we wish extracted from each student into a spreadsheet?
Thanks,
Mark

We just did that for a client, and after we finish the rest of the contract (this week, pretty much), we're going to get a version into the 3.0 release, which will be the next task, so... a few weeks.

Sounds good, sooner the better for us.
Many other things to tie together for the 3.x series release?

The big features are a completely redesigned "School" admin page and a basic fees module. I'll start hyping it soon...

Hi Tom,
how's this going? Might you be able to slip whats ready into the
2.8.4 trunkline if you're not all ready for the 3.0 build?
Thanks
Mark

I'm sorry this keeps getting pushed back. We're a single threaded operation and keep getting the paid contracts we need to keep this going. We have two full weeks of work on a project that has to be deployed in India next month, so there is just not any extra time to be squeezed in for a little while yet.

Hi Tom,
are you any closer to linking the intervention email to a general
email for groups? It would be good to send group emails bcc instead
of all visible email addresses?
Is the current technology with authorisation very difficult to
incorporate? It seems the schooltool emailer doesnt authorise and
therefore increases the vulnerabilities?
A few other questions - Have you a users forum?
What about including a requests page with pledges-towards reaching
critical mass for new developments? If you are now pressed for running
costs?
Thanks,
Mark

Hi Mark,
We aren't so much pressed for money as pressed for time at this point. We've had a large amount of work for one paying client, which has made it difficult to focus on what we need to do for the 3.0 release. We'll be onto that very soon though -- we know we *must* get it out soon.
We don't have a forum, but perhaps it is time.
I have thought about a kickstarter-type effort to get pledges for specific functionality, and I'd definitely pursue it except, a) it doesn't really go along with how schools manage their budgets, and b) it is very likely that five different schools have five different ideas about how a specific set of functionality should be implemented.

Hi Tom,
how has the winter break been? See any time on the horizon for version
3.0 ?
My patient colleagues are starting to mistrust me in my support of and
promises about near term functionality improvements,...
I do wish I could code better.
Here's a Wish List, you might advise on difficulty and likelihood?
Group emails with recipients bcc (blind carbon copies)?
or
An email list from any group?
Customisable exports?
Thanks for the help so far,
kind regards,
mark

Hi Mark,
Sorry I've strung you along so long. We're shooting for doing 3.0 in March. There is so much new code we do have to get it out soon. Custom export works already, we just need to get the release out. We don't have any specific plans for adding more email functionality. The basic part -- sending the emails -- is easy. Schools will want good documentation of which ones seem to have gone out properly, when, etc., so that would add a little time. The bottom line is that if we don't have a paying client for it, it isn't going to get done in the short term.

Hi Tom, what might it cost to upgrade hat email functionality? And
security?

Adding sending emails to a group would take 3-5 days, at $75/hour. It is hard to make this kind of change practical for a single school.

Hi Tom,
thanks for clearing that up,
maybe this is where we need a wishlist page and a donation amount? ie
so all the people that have interest can list it and promisory
funding, till you reach critical mass?
Separately,
How much work to just list onscreen csv text of contact emails, or
phone numbers, out of any group?...these could be cut and pasted into
any email programme? not so hi tech, but functional,
thanks,
mark
