Storing different project work titles for each student

Asked by Matthias Falkenberg

Hi SchoolTool community,

I am currently volunteering at an Institute of Social Work in India and am looking into three different Student Information Systems (Fedena, openSIS, SchoolTool). SchoolTool has really nice features (for example, .xls import function) that the other products do not provide.
Unfortunately, I have difficulties in understanding how I could implement a particular requirement:

(1a) Students at the institute are sent on projects and conduct field work during their studies. Data records for projects as well as the field work include (among others):
 - Semester
 - Start and end date
 - Advisor/supporting teacher
 - Title of the project/ field work
 - Result (pass/fail/...)

(1b) Additionally, the information should become part of a student record that can be exported.

Would you recommend to create a custom course for each project or field work of each student and to set the course title to the title of the project or field work? That would create hundreds of courses each year, because each course would be taken by a single student only.
The only other idea that I can think of so far would be to add custom fields to the personal information of the student.

Can anyone think of a better way to tackle this requirement or give me a recommendation on whether I should pick one of the above options?

Many thanks!

Hi Matthias,

Thanks for your interest in SchoolTool!

You could have a Field Work (or whatever) course and each student could
have a separate section of that course. I don't think it would really be
problematic, or particularly difficult to deal with, and would handle all
your meta-data.

Don't hesitate to let us know if you have other questions or concerns.

Hi Tom, Thank you so much for your super-fast answer. I missed the part about sections in the documentation. Once I get my environment up and running, I will try your suggestion. Thanks again!

could I now integrate the Schooltool with Drupal because I would love to use the Drupal side of views and panels to make the portal of my school both look like a portal aswell as a website in one. What do you think. I am a great fan of this project. I would want to implement it here in Nigeria. I would be giving my feedback and progress as I go along. Thank you very much Tom Hoffman. And would there be a neat way of change how the timetable is layout considering that in your schools the time table is slighly different and I would want to create it in schooltool and export it to be printed out using PDF.

Emanuel,

We actually have a pilot starting in Nigeria right now in Ondo province. Send me an email at <email address hidden> and I'll connect you to the folks working on that project.
