Getting error 503, what does this mean and how can I resolve it? I am using Firefox.

Asked by Carl

I set up SamePlace instant messaging on my home desktop and laptop without any trouble. Tried setting it up at work (not going through a proxy server), and am getting error 503 when I try to open up a chat session. Running Firefox version 3 beta 3. Works without trouble on my two home computers running the same version of Firefox. Any ideas what error 503 means?

Hi Carl,

503 is a generic "service unavailable" error. Are you getting this in an alert window when you connect, or in the chat window when you send messages to a contact? I've seen the latter happen when sending messages to GMail users that aren't in your contact list, and sporadically even when sending messages to those that are.

Hi Bard,

I am able to connect successfully. I am getting this alert when I open
a chat window and try to start typing. The person I am trying to chat
with is on my contact list in GMail. Does it matter if the person is
offline?

Thanks!

Carl

Yes, I'm afraid that's a GMail "feature". It happens to me too on
*some* GMail contacts too (apparently the ones I haven't yet exchanged
messages with, but I'm not sure that's the culprit).

Can you help with this problem?
