RNB has deleted all of my entries

Asked by satsujim

RNB opened today all my prior entries had been deleted. The word and hashtag cloud is also gone. In fact, even the option I had set to close to system tray had become unchecked. I believe the data folder should contain a folder called 2015-01.txt but it only contains an empty file called 2015-02.txt. Here is what is left for the logfile. It only contains today's data.

I'd recommend doing a system-wide search for other month files, e.g.
2015-01.txt

Thanks. This led me to the custom directory where I stored my journal files (forgotten about since I have memory issues) and I was able to restore most of my data since I didn't add much since this problem. But how was the the directory changed back to the default and so did my settings? I'd like to know what caused this and if there is any way to prevent it again. I can't find the preference setting to point journal files towards another custom folder folder and am currently saving in .redbook/data so if this reoccurs all files here will be wiped and I wont have a place where I can get them from again.

I can only think of one situation where the default journal directory is
reset other than when you delete the configuration file or the setting
in the configuration file. It may happen if the journal directory cannot
be opened. In that case a warning is displayed though, I think.

Okay but can I set a directory other than .rednotebook/data? Choosing Edit Preferences only shows me a single General tab with no options for changing directories. I suppose I could use File->Save at frequent intervals but I prefer that this be done automatically.

The journals are saved automatically at timed intervals and when you
close the program. You can move your journal by doing Journal->SaveAs.

Hello,

I downloaded the diary on January 1 2016 for getting all my year there. Suddenly, i see that all the days has been deleted. I went to the ../.rednotebook/data file and there is only 1 file with name is 2016-1.txt and inside of it it is this: '{}'

Just that, what has happened? No Ccleaner used or any tool to remove non used files.

Regards.

Alex.

You might want to do a system-wide search for month files that you
expected there, e.g. "2015-12.txt". If that search doesn't find
anything, I hope you have some zip backups that you can extract to your
.rednotebook/data directory.

Ye, of course i can, but still 1 month files deleted from the last back-up. But the problem is not that, the problem is that if happens once, it could happens twice, so im not happy making a dayly back-up and i will uninstall the program.

I hope you check this serious, urgent and important bug.

Regards.

Sorry to hear that. I'll look into it, but I'm pretty sure this is not
caused by the program itself. RedNotebook only overwrites an old file
with a new file after it checked that the new file has been correctly
written.

Hello,

I have discovered where is the problem. The problem is a user faults but i think that if it has happen to me, then it can happens to anyone, so i'll explain it.

I made a back-up with my diary, then, after reinstalling windows and rednotebook, i selected that back-up file from the folder called 'rednotebook-backup'. Then, i used rednotebook as always, without any kind of problem. Suddenly there was no file, what happened? Of course, some days before it, i deleted 'rednotebook-backup' file, (of course it was here since 1 month ago, needed to sent it to trash). Didnt realized, that the rednotebook program, was uploading 'rednotebook-backup', in fact of //user/.rednotebook/data file. Maybe i supposed badly, but if has happen to me it can happens to anyone, i hope you can develop some function for taking data from backup, and then saving it on //user/.rednotebook/data folder, in fact of back up file.

BTW i have used 'recuva' for trying to recovery my file but it says that it is unrecoverable. Do you know any other tool for recovering or it wont work anyway?

Thank you.

Alex.

Can you help with this problem?
