Cannot run two separate journals

Asked by Michael Patterson

I have kept a handwritten daily diary for many years and decided to use Red Notebook as an'eDiary' from this year on.
This has been relatively successful although I seem to have lost a week's worth of entries for early July, but that is another matter! I have another, historical recording project that I want to keep in a separate journal. This involves making several entries on certain dates of the years from 1946 to 1983 - highlights from old meeting minute books! I cannot seem to open a new journal because whenever I create a folder for the new journal as its own directory, I get an error message telling me that the directory must be empty - which, of course, it is!

Are you using the latest version? Which OS do you use? Are you creating the
folder from within rednotebook? Can you search and post rednotebook.log,
please?

Jendrik,

The version of Red Notebook I have been using is the one which came with
Ubuntu 12.04, but I have kept the updates going and I am not sure which
version I now have!
Ubuntu 12.04 is indeed my operating system!
Yes I am trying to create the folder from within Red Notebook. For
example if I select New>Journal, I am asked to create a folder, which
when done then gives me the error message that the directory must be
empty. I understand the folder name to be the directory for the new
journal!!

Regards

Michael

Ubuntu?
(home directory)/.rednotebook/rednotebook.log .
Make sure you have enabled the "Show hidden files" option in your
system: by default, Linux file managers do not show folders and files
with names like ".something". =)

In addition to that, could you please look into the folder
(home directory)/.rednotebook/data ?
There must be files named like "YYYY-MM.txt".

If you want to attach a file or a few files to the bug report, please
do it from Launchpad's web interface: if you are doing it from your
e-mail client, Launchpad won't grab your attachments correctly.
Either use Launchpad's web interface, or a text- or file-hosting site
akin to pastebin.com.
If there is any kind of sensitive information in the files (for
example, there are passwords in your journal, and you want Jendrik to
see those YYYY-MM.txt files), send them to his personal e-mail
(jendrik.seipp on unibas.ch)!

Michael, please make sure to install the latest version from the homepage
first.

Did you use your regular e-mail program, or a web interface, to send
this letter and the file attached?
Unfortunately, Launchpad really removes all files attached to letters
sent this way.
However, since rednotebook.log is just a text file, you can send
it to us via Pastebin.com. =)

= Open the file in your text file editing program (Gedit in
regular Ubuntu, Kate in Kubuntu and Leafpad in Xubuntu)
= Copy the contents of the file to clipboard
= Open PASTEBIN.COM website
= Paste the text in the large textfield and press "Submit"
= Do you see the URL in the large, thin address field at the top of
your browser window (something like "pastebin.com/Lt237jGFw")? Copy
that address and send it here.

This way, you will be able to send the required data to us, and keep
the message clean. =)

However, if you intend to send your journal files/folder to Jendrik,
the author of the program (With His Consent), please be so kind as to
send these files as attachments, and not as a reply to this Launchpad
bug, but directly to his e-mail address.

You must ==NOT== use Pastebin to post PRIVATE INFORMATION that may be
used in bad ways, like your personal journal data.
Textfiles that are posted to Pastebin can usually be accessed by
anybody who knows the code, or sees the textfile in the "new pastes"
feed.

If you think this advice is difficult, please be patient to read and
understand it. While we may seem to be "tech kids," these things can be
understood if you give them enough time. I am a humanitarian myself,
and, as you can see, gave it enough time. =)
Pardon us for these difficulties. RedNotebook is a free and open-source
project, so we support it as we can. We are eager to fix these bugs:
after all, we do not want to be affected by them!

I seem to have somehow created a folder called dayjournal/2013 which contains three sub folders /03, /04, /05.
Within the dayjournal/2013 are all my individual files for the main journal.
If I go to open another journal and select dayjournal/2013/03 I get a valid, empty journal,i.e. no entries. I must therefore have somehow created this on my journey to where I am today. If I try to open the 04 and 05 journals I get an error message telling me there are no entries in it! My problem, therefore, seems to have moved from 'cannot run a second journal' to ' how did I create these additional journals of which one is valid, and how do I save it using the title I select and not some default, numerical directory title'? It is all very puzzling! Perhaps you can give me some guidance! - I like the tech kid comments by the way!! As a technical manager of design and development teams during my working life I have a great deal of respect for what we used to call 'geeks'! Geeks make the world work for us and I always felt it was my job to keep less enlightened people off their backs whilst they got on with the job!!
By the way, I seem to have version 1.7.2 of rednotebook now!

Hello again, Michael!

If I were Jendrik, I'd ask you to send an e-mail to his personal
address with an archive of your "dailyjournal" folder (or is it
"dailyjournal/2013", with "/" in folder name?) and subfolders.
But -- let's hear from him before that.

If you want to create additional journals with personalized names,
create... a new empty folder and tell RedNotebook to open it.
This folder can be located wherever you want: in your home folder, on
your FAT32 partition, on your flash disk drive... There must be a
folder, and there, optionally, must be files named YYYY-MM.txt in it.

Since RNB uses ==folders== instead of files to create journals,
creating an empty journal basically means creating an empty folder
somewhere and telling the program to open it.

By the way: Jendrik, will it be hard to hook up RNB to use
(password-protected) 7z archives instead of folders for journals? The
inner structure might be pretty much the same, and there exist many
plug-ins for various programs and hardware to read the contents of
zip/rar/7z files without any interruption (XMPlay, FB2 e-book readers,
PocketBook e-readers).
I guess pointing somebody to a file named "journal.rednotebook.7z"
would be more user-friendly than folder-fiddling, and password
protection is just enough. =)
I confess I know little about the workings, and I know you are quite
busy, but an idea is an idea, and those plugins were created exactly
because moving zip-archives is easier than vast collections.

Can you help with this problem?

Provide an answer of your own, or ask Michael Patterson for more information if necessary.
