Qimo installation hangs - won't get past "select language" step

Asked by MABodie

We are trying to install Qimo on an old, unused Dell desktop (2.6GHz pentium 4 with 256MB RAM).

We've downloaded several copies of the installation disk (from 2 different sites) and now have the Qimo CD(complete with eskimo boy printed on it) we ordered via mail. We get to select the language fine but never get to the select time zone step. (In terms of the instructions at QimoVolMan.pdf, we can do the steps on page 1 but not any further.) I've tried selecting both English and French but no luck.

Each CD shows an error when checked for defects. That is when we select "Check CD for defects" on the initial Qimo installation screen, the response is "Check finished: errors found in 1 files!" It doesn't make sense that this is due to a CD defect given that it has happened with several CDs, including the mail ordered one.

Thoughts or suggestions for getting Qimo installed?

Thank you for your help!

p.s. I posted this on UnbuntuForums and am cross posting it here. (I think it should have just been posted here in the 1st place-oops!)

The CD check always shows a defect, I was never able to track down which file had the error, but everything seems to fun fine, so don't worry about that.

Whenever I have seen a problem like this installing Qimo, it's usually due to not having enough memory. While 256 MB should be enough, often things like onboard video cards will reserve a portion of that total memory for themselves, leaving less for the Qimo installer. If you have any additional memory you can put in that system, it may allow you to install without a problem. After that, you can remove the extra memory is necessary, and Qimo itself should run fine.

Thanks for the quick reply.

Unfortunately we don't have any more memory with the right number of pins etc. We placed on order at newegg this morning for more and should get it soon..

Out of curiosity, was there a place that I should have read it was okay to have one defect show up when checking the disk? I call myself reading the FAQ and searching in Google but don't recall anything about 1 file defect being okay.

There isn't anywhere that mentions the defect on the CD, no, but I will go ahead and add it to our FAQs

mhall119 suggests this article as an answer to your question:
FAQ #886: “Qimo cd check find defects”.

Thank you. This solves the "defect" problem. I'll open a separate question if the additional memory doesn't solve the hanging problem.

Installing additional memory solved the problem. Thanks again!
