laptop shuts down during install

Asked by Dale Bailey

I have a Dell Inspiron 9200 laptop. 1.6ghz single core processor with 1 Gb ram, and 80Gb HDD. I have Windows XP pro installed, which works perfectly albeit slow. When I run the live cd, Qimo appears to work fine. I tried to install from the cd, but the laptop shuts down during install. I used unetbootin to make a usb install. This did the same thing. It goes through all of the questions, then gets to somewhere around 37-39% of copying files for install, and shuts down. I've reformatted the partition numerous times and started over again, to receive the same results.
I have used several programs to test the HDD and the Ram, they passed all tests. I have seperated the partitions into one for xp, and another for qimo with a linux swap partition. I just cannot get it to install. Please help me.

Wow... maybe I shouldn't even bother trying to use this OS, since I can't even get any help.

Dale - I'm sorry my husband hasn't gotten a chance to answer your question. This OS is developed by him, and maintained by him as best he can. He also works full time, is a full time student, and we have a family... sometimes things have to sit on the back burner.

As for installation? My first suggestion would be to try installing from a different CD, in case the burn is bad, or perhaps swapping out the memory, to see if you've got some bad memory.

If you're using the new HP's (i.e HP Pavillion 620), I had the same problem
dual booting. The only thing that worked for me was Installing the OS on the
entire disc and then re-installing Windows and then using the LiveCd to
restore the GRUB. May work for you if you're dual-booting. Also, i had a
similar event happen on another laptop, but different distro (Lubuntu on
Dell Mini 10), and the install failed each time when i tried to encrypt the
disc during installation. What worked was not encrypting the disc during
install and doing afterwards
