While Editing Menus and Channels, Site Just went away

My guess is that your frontpage is now pointing to something non-existent.

Goto Administer => Content Management => Frontpage, and perhaps set your frontpage to an existing channel and see what you get?

I don't understand how I can get to "Administer => Content Management => and Frontpage => without being able to load the front page when I type the url into my address bar????

Try going to http://www.peoplesvoiceweekly.us/user. Any page will do actually, so long as it's not the frontpage.

Also, I suspect when you deleted the menu item, you accidentally deleted the one the frontpage points to.

Okay: Let me tell you what I've been through this time....
Before I received your response, I had already decided to just download version 8; back-up 7; back-up my database, and upload the new files; reinstall ProsePoint on my server, and restore the database. That got me back in.... And I would imagine you are right about your thoughts.

I'm only just beginning to figure out how the software works. I guess if I have a menu item that has "children" or I haven't set up channels in the proper hierarchy that CAN be disastrous.

Okay, so I can now access my front page. But, the wierdest thing is happening now. Every time I type in my url http://www.peoplesvoiceweekly.us, I get a "ProsePoint" style page that says I do not have permission to access
the page. Also, the menu (ON THAT PAGE) is not the menu I have configured for the site.

But, when I log in as administrator, that goes away and I can see the "real" front page with all the administration menus... but not when I try to access the page as an ordinary visitor would....

What do you think is up with that?

Are you saying you tried to upgrade from ProsePoint 0.07 to 0.08 this way? If so, you need to run www.peoplesvoiceweekly.us/update.php - See the upgrading guide http://www.prosepoint.org/docs/upgrading-prosepoint.html especially around section 7.1.5. If you change ProsePoint versions without doing this update, then it is very likely to get confused.

Can you also please re-enable your theme (section 7.4.3)?

Is this an observation, or a guess of yours? If you don't set up a hierarchy for your channels, ProsePoint should treat them as independent channels. There should be no harm done.

Not sure about that, but let's clear up the ones we do now about, and then look at this if it still persists.

You probably have cacheing turned on. See Administer => Site configuration => Performance. You can try setting 'Caching mode' to Disabled and see if that helps.

On this Performance change, please make sure that 'Block cache' is Disabled, and please make sure 'Optimize Javascript files' is also Disabled. These two features haven't been fully tested yet.

And then click 'Save configuration' to save your settings.

Afterwards, you can also click 'Clear cached data' (at the bottom of the page) and see if that helps too.

Once all that is done, please see if the problems you are encountering still exist. They might have gone away if you do as described above, or may still persist.

Let me know how you go.

The online user guide just got updated.

The section on re-enabling themes is no longer 7.4.3. It is now 7.5.3.

[Yes. This is the way my web-host instructed me to do it. I was instructed to back-up the database (this can be done automatically on their webservers). Delete the old database. Set up a new database with the same name and user name. Do the re-install, using the new database. Then after the re-install, restore the database.
It worked pretty good. Everything I had done came back with the exeception of that "crazy" home-page that I'm getting when I go to the URL.]

[I did follow the users guide and took the site offline, then ran the update, as instructed. But, this is when I got the funny page... I was happy because before that, I wasn't getting anything but an error page... at least I got something that looked like my website!]

[This is actually something I read in all the documentation I've been reading on the program.... I guess after you work at it for so long, all this stuff sort of starts to run together....]

What the heck does all this mean?

You're actually not supposed to get a message like that :(

Those are warning messages indicating the contents of the database aren't as expected. In this case, it's complaining about theme configurations. If we're lucky, after you clear the cache, those messages will go away as ProsePoint self-corrects the database.

If we're unlucky... and the message still persists, I'll have to ask you to enable and disable all themes (and cross your fingers) - but don't do this unless you have to.

Also, I'm going to amend your webhost's instructions to:

Back-up the database (this can be done automatically on their webservers).
Re-upload the source code (only), do not delete or re-install the database.
Run update.php.

There is no need to go through the ProsePoint installation process again, and no need to restore the database (if there are no error messages).

Also, even if this upgrade works, there is no guarantee it will fix up your frontpage problem. It should actually be two unrelated issues.

If you go into Administer => Site building => Themes, you will see a list of themes with square checkboxes in one column and round checkboxes in another column. You enable themes by ticking the square checkbox next to your theme and then click on the button 'Save configuration' at the bottom.

I suspect you're entering code into the editor which is getting filtered to prevent users inserting malicious scripts.

Try the following:

When you enter your code into the visual editor, click on 'Input format' just below the editor. That should reveal two round checkboxes. Select the one that says 'Full HTML' (and of course, Save the post).

If that doesn't work, please give me more information about what you are doing, and be very specific about it. It's difficult for me to diagnose the situation when I only have general descriptions.

That's going to require some knowledge of CSS and editing of theme files. It can't be done directly through the site itself. Are you comfortable using CSS?

Your frontpage is set to the channel "Local". However, there are no stories in that channel (actually, there are no stories at all on the site). That's why it's saying "Access denied". Once you post a story and assign it to that channel, you'll be fine.

On another point, it looks like you've turned on a lot of things on your site. Many of these came with the underlying Drupal system, but they don't actually make sense when used with ProsePoint (and they're not intended to be used with ProsePoint either). Please be aware of this.

In some cases, having too many things enabled which you don't actually used will just make it confusing.

And you are right, I turned on a lot of things, just trying to play around
with it and see exactly what each feature entails. That's how I learn best.

I probably don't intend to use a lot of that stuff. Just trying to
understand the architecture, since I'll be the one using and maintaining it
(IF I EVER GET IT UP AND RUNNING AND CONFIGURED LIKE I WANT) So, far, it's
going pretty good. I'm just trying to figure out how to manage it. And
that's hard, when you don't really understand the inner workings of the
site. But, this has really helped me a lot.

No problem.

Drupal comes with a *lot* of things, and it's easy to get overwhelmed if you're seeing it for the first time. When we package it up into ProsePoint, we try to only enable what's needed (and what's tested). We can't stop people turning on modules, but we can't realistically support them either.

Yes, we're working to make things easier, but unfortunately, it takes time. To be fair to yourself, you're trying out a beta product. It's not quite ready for the masses yet, and you're doing well to persevere as far as you have.

But, I am assuming that I can always return to "restore defaults" and put it back like it was right?

I don't think there is a singular global 'restore defaults' that will undo everything you've done. Your best bet is to disable the extra modules that you've enabled.
