ProsePoint does not work on 000webhost.com

Asked by thevoice

The program is not behaving as the instructions say it should. After reading and re-reading and following all instructions, the installation page did not show up when I pointed my browser to my site's url, as it states in the instructions. I really need some help here.

Hi,

um .... can you tell me what you've done, which step in 6.4.x you're stuck at, and what you're seeing?

That is, which step in 6.4.x from the user guide at http://www.prosepoint.org/docs/continuing-the-installation.html.

Well, shortly after I posted, I did manage to unearth an online manual. So, I did manage to get through the installation. But, my installation said I that there were errors. My problem at first was in ch moding the right files. But, I managed to get through that by reading my way through it... It's just that it's taken me 48 hours to finally get that done. However, now, when I type my url in my browser, I'm taken to a Drupal log-in page, and I don't know how to actually get to MY site to configure it. When I use my ProsePoint log-in That's not working. Let's face it. I am confused. It's all mixed up and crazy. And I'm about crazy fooling with it all weekend.

Hmm... may I suggest you take a deep breath and maybe go take a walk or something to clear your mind?

And then come back to this issue when you're ready to give it another go.

At the moment, I'll need some information from you to help.

Like ...

What version of ProsePoint are you installing?
Can you start reinstallation from anew? (so that we start from a known baseline)
When you get to your problem, what did you expect to see? and what did you actually see?

Perhaps also answer my question from the previous comment?

I've already FTP'd the files to the server (TWICE) in one day. Not that I don't want to do it again-- but truthfully, I DON'T, because this whole process takes HOURS... And I'm running low on Patience after spending my entire weekend on this. The directions make it appear to be shamefully easy... but they are not ... especially for someone who is not a techie. I just read my way through the process, and hope for success.

My version is ProsePoint-0.06, based on the files that were extracted from the .tar.

After I managed to get all the way through the installation, I came to the page where you go through and configure the site information. I guess this is where I really messed up. By the time I got through trying different passwords, I literally forgot what password I used. Because when you get to the bottom of that page, and click "Save and Continue" nothing really happens. I assumed that page would take me somewhere else, where I could actually see the site live... or see a front-page or some kind of Administration Page. But, no such luck.

I finally decided to click on the Icon at the top (left) of the page, and I'm taken to Drupal, where I'm assuming I am to log in with my website password(s), which by now I have forgotten.... From there, it all goes downhill.

When I type my URL in the browswer, it takes me to that Drupal login page. It says "Welcome to your new Drupal Site, and prompts you to log in or create an account. Then it tells you that you go to an admin area (which I am not allowed to do) and configure the site (which -- again, I'm not allowed to do) So, I just create a new account, but using the same email address I used to create the ProsePoint site. WRONG MOVE.
Now, the website does not recognize me, nor does DRUPAL. I'm sick of it. I'm sick enough to be ready to QUIT.

It's just that I was so enthused about finding this program. I publish a small newpaper, and I've been looking for a content management system like this (something economical to run and easy to maintain) for the 3 years since I've had my publication. So, I thought "This is It!" But, now, I've got the devil in me, from all this mental maze I've gone through trying to get this thing installed. Now, after coming so close, I can't even run it.

I'm sorry that it hasn't worked out. I can sense a lot of frustration, so if you don't want to continue any further, I understand.

I would like to help, but if you're in this state of mind where you aren't thinking clearly, perhaps this is not the best time. It'll just lead to more frustration for both of us.

We are trying the best we can with ProsePoint, but please bear in mind it's still in active development. You are already quite ahead of the curve in trying it out.

Perhaps if you'd like to come back in about 2-3 months time? By then, hopefully, it would have gained enough usage that your web hosting provider can directly support people like yourself in installing it?

I CLICKED ON THE WRONG LINK. THE PROBLEM IS NOT SOLVED. I'M JUST PROVIDING MORE INFORMATION.

Well, the main thing I would like to know, after all of these hours working on it: is this what it is supposed to do --
take me to Drupal? And if so, I guess some advanced warning would have been nice. Then I would have had sense enough to figure out how to respond to the queries on their site, and probably would have been more careful with the password responses. At this point, I think I'm completely locked out of the configuration stage now, because I've attempted to log on to Drupal so many times, with the wrong password, until they probably think I'm a security threat or some kind of "hacker."

I'm not such an idiot that I'm about to give up on it after working on it this long. I mean, it really has been very frustrating, because I'm not installing a php script every day. I probably use them all the time... but setting one up is a different issue.

I understand that ProsePoint is some kind of derivative of Drupal. I got that much. But, after two attempts at uploading these files, and setting up a data base, and trying to pull the process together, I just wasn't thinking that what I would see upon completion is a Drupal long-in page.

There's no way I'm waiting three months to do this. I've gone too far.

I've got a host, and I've got the files. And I've now at least run through the installation process. But, of course the reward is seeing the end result. ... a site up and running.

Ah, nice to know you're back and still raring to give it another shot. I wasn't sure how you were feeling about the whole thing.

> Well, the main thing I would like to know, after all of these hours working on it:
> is this what it is supposed to do -- take me to Drupal?

No, it shouldn't take you to the Drupal website. However, the Drupal software has so many hardcoded links to drupal.org, we didn't try to change them all. And at this early point in time, directing people to the relevant drupal page may be more helpful than directing them to prosepoint.org (for technical users, anyway).

So, let's find some common ground so I know where you're at.

Firstly, can you please verify that your server host satisfies the requirements listed at http://www.prosepoint.org/docs/requirements.html?

Secondly, I'd like you to do a complete re-install. However, you don't need to re-FTP all your files. Drupal/ProsePoint installation never modifies your files except under .../sites.

You only need to delete everything below .../sites/default/files and recopy .../sites/default/settings.php from .../sites/default/default.settings.php.

After that, please start at step 6.2 of http://www.prosepoint.org/docs/creating-a-database.html, and follow the steps.

When you get to something that doesn't seem right, stop and don't proceed any further. Instead, tell me which step you just did, and what you are seeing.

ie. you just did step "6.4.2. Configure Site", and you got an error message.

It's also quite helpful if, for any browser error pages, you could tell me the title as it appears on your browser's window bar (if there is one), and also a copy-paste of the browser url.

Okay: I will follow your instructions and do the re-install.

Prior to doing that, however, if I want my ProsePoint Site to look and function exactly as the demo site, do I need to also install those two themes? Zen and TMA? I was also reading about that somewhere, and I'm confused, becuase i assumed that the theme is alread incorporated into the program.

I feel confident that my server has all the requirements. Of course, I was installing it on a free server, because I wanted to play around with the program, and learn how it operates, before investing any money in buying webhosting, and all that stuff. Information from my web-server follows:

If you have the luxury of choosing your own server setup, this is the recommended technology stack for running ProsePoint:

Apache 2.0.x or 2.2.x with the mod_rewrite extension enabled.
MySQL 5.x
PHP 5.2 or higher

I'm fairly sure it does. I have a free server account at 000.webhost.com. Here's what they provide:

ANOTHER QUESTION FOR YOU....
I just went ahead and cleaned up (refreshed) my site, and FTP'd the files again.
I did not want to run into the same problems that I encountered during the first installation.

When I started the install the very first go round, I got errors, that several of the modules were not found. So,
I went back to the .tar file and found them, and put the individual files in the "module" folder. There were several that (I assume) did not get extrated from the .tar)

They were content_copy, nodeference, number, user reference, fieldgroup, option widgets, composit, and text modules. The first time around, I just FTP'd the individual files in the "modules" folder.

However, what I'm trying to do this time, is find those modules and all the files associated with them, and make folders to put in the module file. My concern is whether or not I have named the folders correctly, and if this will in fact work to make the installation go smoother.

If I should do something else, please let me know. I'm just starting over from scratch

Hi, sorry for the delay. It's a different timezone over here and my day has just started.

Firstly, ProsePoint 0.07 got released overnight. I wasn't sure whether it would be ready in time for you to try out. You can either go straight to 0.07 or stay with 0.06 - whichever suits.

If you are reinstalling, yes, you need to clear out your database.

That file .../sites/default/files/.htaccess would have been created by your web server during the previous installation, and it's owned by the web server account, not your account, so you can't delete it. However, if your .../sites/default/files directory only contains this one file and nothing else, that's sufficient for reinstalling.

You only download a single .tar.gz file. The file itself is hosted on launchpad, but there are links to it from the ProsePoint website.

For reference, you should have got http://launchpad.net/prosepoint/trunk/0.06/+download/prosepoint-0.06.tar.gz or http://launchpad.net/prosepoint/trunk/0.07/+download/prosepoint-0.07.tar.gz.

Please upload the extracted file as they appear when uncompressed from the tar.gz file. They should already be in the correct directory structure.

Also, some uncompressors on Windows don't uncompressed .tar.gz packages properly.

If the install page complains about missing modules, it is possible your FTP program didn't upload everything. In that case, you'll have to check that every single file got uploaded properly.

Yes, I know this is a big hassle, but if your FTP program isn't working properly, I can't help you with that.

Or you could try FileZilla as an alternative FTP upload program - I used it several years ago, so I'm not sure about it's current state now. FileZilla has intelligent retries so you just tell it to upload everything and go take a walk for an hour.

Thanks for your reply.

Actually, after I ended up refreshing the site, I did manage to find the ProsePoint 0.07 release. So, I got rid of the 0.06 and instead used the 0.07 release.

I'm using Winzip to extract the files.

But, I still have many questions.... I've done it so many times, now, until I have it in my mind what to do.

After reading so much information about it, I'm now assuming that the site will not appear as it does on the demo.

This is a theme that must be installed... am I right? So, is it possible to include the theme files with the installation upload, or do I install first, and then work on the theme? I think this may also have been part of my confusion.

Hmmm.... can I get you to do some diagnostics for me?

Create a file, call it phpinfo.php, with the following (single line) contents:

<?php phpinfo(); ?>

Then upload that file to your site and visit it with your browser (ie. http://yoursite.com/phpinfo.php). You should see a list of information about your server's php setup.

Could you tell me which version of PHP is reported? Or better yet, paste me the url so I can have a look at it myself (to check if anything else might cause problems).

uh oh! I need to rename the file. I just realized that I did not name it correctly. I think I named it php.info
Let me go back and rename the file correctly.

Also, I have just refreshed the site again, and I'm doing a new upload of the prosepoint-0.07 release.
So I'll have a fresh start

I see the phpinfo.php file. Your PHP version is 5.2.6, which is good.

However, there are a couple of settings I need you to get changed:

session.save_handler = user
max_execution_time = 30

Since you're using shared hosting, I think you'll have to ask your webhost to change them.

If they ask you questions about what you're trying to do, tell them you're trying to install Drupal. ProsePoint is close enough to Drupal that if you can install one, you can install the other.

On another note, I don't know why you got the message:

Warning: array_keys() [function.array-keys]: The first argument should be an array in /home/a8390104/public_html/includes/theme.maintenance.inc on line 227

I suspect file corruption, but I can't be sure. But let's leave that for later and see what your webhost says first.

Automatic installation from a control panel isn't the same as installing from a php package, unfortunately, so that doesn't indicate anything definite.

So, what's the current status? Did your webhost change those values for you?

However, there are a couple of settings I need you to get changed:

I was able to manually change the session.save_handler
But the site has no provisions (that I can find) to change max_execution_time.

I will send a support question to the webhost to find out if this can be changed.

Anyway, I did go ahead and attempt the install.... It flopped before I got to first base.

Got this error message.....

I got this info from the FAQ on the site

Can you increase resource limits, enable some functions?

We cannot change default server configuration as it would affect all the other users too. Current server configuration enables maximum security and performance for users, so it cannot be changed.

PHP Errors: Warning: ini_set() has been disabled for security reasons

You can get this or any similar error by running PHP script, because function is considered dangerous, so it is disabled on main PHP configuration (php.ini)

We have disabled most insecure PHP functions and it cannot be enabled for security reasons. To remove this warning, edit your PHP script and remove entire line where disabled function is mentioned or insert this line on the top of PHP script:

error_reporting(0);

Is there any way around these issues?

bengtan (bengtan) said :

"Maximum execution time of 10 seconds ... " is definitely a show stopper. If you can't get them to increase it, then we'll get nowhere.

The others about possible disabled functions .... I'm not sure. The best we can do is try and see. But we may very well end up chasing up a whole bunch of error messages.

And, I did look at your webhosts's site ... they don't exactly give me confidence things will work.

Hi,

Well, if your host can't handle Drupal, it definitely won't be able to handle ProsePoint either. It's unfortunate, but at least now you have someone to blame for the lost 48 hours of your life :)

I'll consider this question resolved then. If you have trouble installing on a different web host, please open another question or bug. This one has gone on too long already.

Thank you.

Well, I do thank you for all of your assistance. I've looked at many other
CMSs and I really like the look and feel of ProsePoint.
I'm still not going to give up on it. However, I think I'll take a short
reprieve while I find a webhost. My newspaper is growing, but I really need
a stronger and more stable web presence. Right now, I am blogging at
www.peoplesvoiceweekly.wordpress.com. But, I
really want a site that does more than just blogs. It needs to look and
feel and work like a newspaper site, I'm just not financially in a position
to invest a lot of money to have one designed. I've tried the whole nine
yards, Bulletlink, CleverCopy, Props... So, I think this one comes closer
to what may suit my needs, without the expense. I'm going to shop for an
economical webhost, and pay for appropriate hosting service, and try to
reinstall the program. So, when I get hung up... I promise, I will be
contacting you again.

Thank you for your assistance.
