Hi,

Google dropped support for NPAPI plugins like Silverlight or Unity3D on Linux and is going to do the same on Windows at the end of the year. This makes it impossible for Pipelight to support Chrome. The only solution is to use a patched chromium version as described at http://pipelight.net/cms/chrome-chromium.html but this also introduces some other disadvantages. I would recommend using Firefox for Pipelight.

For me Chromium is glitchy and eats up alot of my ram when i play games and watch YouTube at the same time (only 2Gbram)

And i dont really like Firefox because there is an extra window border and i cant really multitask with that since i have an small screen.

Can this have something to do with that i use Xubuntu?

You could use the browser uzbl which is completely controlled via keyboard and does not contain any unnecessary graphic elements, perfectly suited for small screens. It may take a bit of time to learn all the shortcuts but it is very lightweight and supports Pipelight.

Cant pipelight come in the chromestore?

No, thats not possible for multiple reasons:

* First of all, pipelight is written as an NPAPI plugin. Since Chrome doesn't want to support this plugin interface anymore (as Michael has already mentioned), they also don't accept any new submissions to the Chromestore which are based on that. Their plan is to get rid of all third party plugins, and only continue to support plugins which were written exclusively for Chrome. They'll also discontinue to support other plugins on Windows soon, by the way. Rewriting as a different plugin is impossible in case of pipelight, all other plugin interfaces have way too many restrictions, to allow reimplementing it (you'll find some discussions about that in the bug report related to the Chrome NPAPI deprecation).

* Besides that, Pipelight (in combination with all the dependencies) is really huge. Reason is that Pipelight uses Wine in the background, and this would blow up the package size dramatically - basically the package would have to contain a full linux distribution to make sure, that everything is present, and Pipelight/Wine works properly.

If you want to continue using Pipelight in Chromium (doesn't work for Chrome), you can apply some patches, which partially restore the plugin interface features, that were dropped in the latest version. Nevertheless its probably not really worth the effort - there are also very good alternative browsers, and you can use one for your regular pages, and one for VOD sites. This also leads to better security: As you can imagine, when Silverlight contains a security hole, you're affected in exactly the same way as a Windows user, when having Pipelight enabled on every page without click-to-play.

Regards,
Sebastian

My last choice seems to be opera, does pipelight work in that?

Hi,

it works in the old Opera version 12, but not in the current Opera beta (version 24) as Opera uses the same rendering engine as Chrome now.

And Midori?

Midori is also supported. You just have to change your useragent to a
Windows string, and then all VOD pages should be able to recognize that
Silverlight is installed.
