S3 / S3-compatible / swift support

Asked by Schmirrwurst

Do a layer enabling to access external storage is already on the roadmap ?

Would be nice being able to add S3 as source in File, the same way you can add scp in nautilus...

Hi, thank you.

I don't think so, if I've understand the feature request in Bug #1472698, the aim is to provide a API for Dropbox,Google Drive and other, to have a standard way to access and display informations in Files/Nautilus...

I see Openstack Swift, and S3 / S3 compatible, more as a new protocol in "Connect to server"
For example :
s3://mys3 ...
swift://

Diffculty would be probably being able to setup the endpoint in S3 Url for S3-Compatible Storage (not by amazon)

OK, I think I understand now. FIles relies on gvfs-backends package to provide "transparent" access to schemes such as ftp://, smb://, afp:// etc. The Connect to Server dialog gives the range currently supported in the "Type" drop-down box. The ssh protocol is already supported for secure transport (sftp:// protocol).

There are no plans currently for ElementaryOS to build further backends - resources are too limited - but if one were available we would use it.

Quite a lot of work has been done making the existing network protocol support more stable but it has not yet been reviewed or merged. Hopefully it will appear in Loki.

I suggest you raise a wishlist bug on this issue, preferably on the gvfs project.
