Installing openshot removed packages needed for videos

Asked by Saneless

When I installed Openshot, it wanted to install its own extras versions of codecs and removed some others I already had installed. I had a problem with my installation earlier and videos weren't working anymore. I didn't know what was up, but when I saw that it was removing codecs, I thought maybe this program was the culprit.

So I played a video fine, installed Openshot, and there it was: Videos no longer worked (stream error).

Running AMD64 version of ubuntu 9.10. Maybe this is fine in 9.04, but it killed my video codecs and I can't seem to get it working again.

What video application are you using to view the videos? Mplayer? VLC?

Both, either. I was able to get things working again when I reinstalled every codec package I could find.

Looking a little deeper, it's the mlt packages that want to remove the codecs, not Openshot itself. installing libmlt, which installed the libavcodec extra packages and removed the standards, there went video again.

This also happened on my system, but I can not figure out what codecs are missing. Both VLC and Totem movie player quit. I did not immediately connect it with Openshot. When I start Totem in a terminal window, I get this error:

/var/lib/python-support/python2.6/gdata/tlslite/utils/cryptomath.py:9: DeprecationWarning: the sha module is deprecated; use the hashlib module instead
  import sha

From the terminal, VLC reports:

[00000419] avcodec decoder error: cannot open codec (MPEG-4 Video)
[00000419] main decoder error: no suitable decoder module for fourcc `mp4v'.
VLC probably does not support this sound or video format.

Is this a python problem? Or, what decoder is missing?
Thanks for a great video editor.

I have the same problem. Program looks great but no video codecs for my video players, just constant errors. I installed the program on Ubuntu 9.04 using the advised synaptic method. Why does the pogram remove other bits and pieces? Not much good if it stuffs up the rest of the system. Don't like programs that take over my install.
