I was looking for information about how to use the video editor. First time user...

Asked by Jim Hopkins

I was looking for some instructions/information about how to use this video editor. First time effort to use a video editor of any kind. I have created a DVD from a VHS video tape using a DVD recorder and now I want to edit the DVD video to break it into separate components/chapters. On importing the VIDEO-TS folder into Openshot I can now see five files VTS_01_1.VOB etc up to VTS_01_5_VOB. So what do I do next? Is there an instruction manual for Open Shot?

HI,

The best is to take a look at our manual on line here : http://www.openshotusers.com/help/1.3/en/
If your language is not English, he is available in another languages : Just check if your 's is on this list : http://www.openshotusers.com/
You could take in hands quickly and have a look at an Editor Video no linear.
After, you could do a lot of operation in Openshot easily (cut, add transition, effects, colors corrections..... and export the result in a format that you could use after in a Authoring software for creating a DVD Video if it is what you want.
Here a list of the main authoring software available on Linux : http://openshotusers.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=27&t=222&p=821#p821

Thanks Cenwen

Can see a way forward. Have had a look at the manual. By the way do I need
to convert VOB files to avi. files or whatever before putting them in
Openshot? If so, does converting to avi. and later back to DVD-video
result in any noticeable loss of picture?

Regards

Jungle

Openshot can worked with all formats managed by FFmpeg including HD Formats and the list is huge. See here : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OpenShot_Video_Editor and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FFmpeg.
So it doesn't matter the format that you have in input.
A DVD Video is mainly a MPEG2 format (sometimes in MPEG4 but it is not the standard and it is a bit more complexed.) This files are using the extension .vob or .dvd (in fact it is the same) with a structure of the type AUDIO-TS/VIDEO_TS.
Openshot have not yet the possibility/functions to create directly a basic DVD (i.e no menu and it is played soon he is in the player) but you can do all what you want (ie to prepare your video like you want) until the creation of DVD. You export your file in the format dvd and you'll obtain a file.dvd ready to be use in an authoring software.
The best way is to use the Simple tab on the Export screen and choose DVD>DVD pal (for sample for Europe, use NTSC if you are living in USA)>dvd WiIdscreen (for 16/9) and Hight quality.
Hope this helps.
