Asked by Santosh Vaswwani

Hi,

I just seen Openstack (Rackspace Announces Open Source Cloud Platform), I would like to know which language application (like Java, .net) it allows to upload on cloud environment and how it can be done? It is open source so can I register and upload any application (how much) on my cloud.

I am using google app engine to upload my java applications but I would like to know comparision between Openstack and googleappengine.

Can you please provide this information.

Thanks,

Hi Santosh,

Cloud computing is generally divided into three different layers:

Infrastructure as a service (IaaS): examples include Rackspace Cloud Servers and Amazon EC2

Platform as a service(PaaS): examples include Google App Engine and Heroku

Software as a service(SaaS): examples include Wordpress.com or Salesforce.com

It sounds like you have used PaaS, where you can upload custom software to the cloud and let it scale automatically. OpenStack is more on the level of IaaS, which means it helps you control virtualized servers on your own hardware.

Hi,

Thanks for your quick answer and detailed information on OpenStack.

I have highly configured Server machines on which I want to create cloud infrastructure so can I use OpenStack to create infrastructure of cloud on my server machines and how can I do it? Is there any cost for it? What are the exact steps I have to follow and is there any other specific requirement for this?

Please provide me this information.

Regards,
Santosh

Hi Santosh,

Openstack is a complex open source software stack. As such, there aren't a simple set of instructions for getting it up and running on your own servers. It will take some perseverence at the moment to get things running properly. The code on the compute side is under heavy development and changing daily. As we continue to develop the software, we are also improving the documentation. We wish to eventually provide an easy install experience, but we aren't quite there yet.

The documentation that we do have can be found at wiki.openstackck.org

Can you help with this problem?
