does not start, error message

Asked by Piotr Otulakowski

Mnemosyne will not start with the following errors:
1. "Either Mnemosyne didn't shot down properly, or another copy of Mnemosyne is still running..."
After I choose 'Continue', I get:
2. "Unable to load database. Creating tmp file".
After clicking OK it does nothing. I tried to reinstal Mnemosyne, remove it and delete any traces, like .mnemosyne folder, etc. Nothing works. At the same time, it used to work OK, and it also works fine on my XP computer.

Was there anything in the error_log.txt file?

Make sure your home directory did not accidentally lose write permission and that you don't have special characters in your login name.

Also make sure you don't confuse Mnemosyne running from an USB key with the Mnemosyne installed on your machine itself.

Peter, thank you for your answer.
1. There is no error_log.txt file;
2. Since home directory under Windows 7 has some 'special' permissions, I do not want to play with it, but all other apps seem to have no problem with writing to that location;
3. I run Mnemosyne from installation on local computer.
Since you mentioned USB key: can you direct me to instructions how to install Mnemosyne as portable app? It might solve the problem with local installation.

That's of course up to you if you don't want to follow up on that, but there has been reports of Windows changing the write permissions behind your back on that directory, causing Mnemosyne to stop working.

I do have Write permission in my 'home' directory. If you want me to check
any particular subdirectory in that location, let me know.

Peter, thank you for your assistance so far.
I used link you sent me to install Mnemosyne as portable app, and it works OK. I guess in this case we should not spend any more time on this issue.
Thanks again.
