Hi Mark,

I'm sorry to have to tell you, but you've been swindled into buying a copy of Mixxx. Mixxx is Free and open-source software for DJing. I hope you didn't pay too much for it.

You can download the latest version of Mixxx, 1.8.0, for free from http://mixxx.org

Mixxx will always be free, open-source, and spyware-free.

To answer your question, Mixxx imports songs from the library location you specify in the Preferences -> Library section. If you change your library location to point to your Music folder, and re-scan your library, it should import the tracks in question.

However, Mixxx does not support WMA (Windows Media Audio), because it is a proprietary format and we do not license proprietary codecs from vendors.

Thanks,
RJ Ryan

Hi, you can find the item and seller on Ebay page http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=200524380108&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT

As You can see, I paid £4 in total which I feel is a fair price for the item, I therefore do not want my name mentioned in any complaint you make against this seller.

Can you explain how I copy CDs onto my PC so that the MAXXX system picks it up immediately ?

Regards

Mark.

Hi Mark,

Could you please tell me if the Mixxx CD includes anything referring to the Mixxx Source Code? Mixxx is open-source under the GNU Public License, and it is completely legal for someone like this seller to sell a copy of Mixxx on eBay, except they must comply with the terms of the GPL, which includes bundling a copy of the source code with the CD. Since Mixxx is open-source, providing a copy of the source code to you allows you to remix it and customize it to your liking, so it is important that anybody selling Mixxx also include a copy of the source code.

As for copying CDs to your computer, this is something that any CD ripper tool can do. I would suggest using a Free and open-source CD ripper tool such as CDex (http://cdexos.sourceforge.net/). Not only is it open-source, it is the 14th most popular download on SourceForge.net with over 41 million downloads. This, along with the guarantee of access to the source code, protects you from spyware, as long as you download it from their official website.

In order to play music files in Mixxx, they must be in an audio format that Mixxx supports. Mixxx supports MP3, WAV, AIFF, FLAC, and Ogg/Vorbis, so make sure to rip songs from your CDs in one of these formats in order to use them with Mixxx.

Thanks and have a good one,
RJ Ryan

This is a interesting topic.
I was under the impression that it is perfectly legal to sell copys of this program as long you dont use the name MIXXX which is copyrighted?

Couple of things,

Firstly, it's not strictly against the GPL license to resell the software, and in the cases where people do not have access to the Internet or a fast connection it kind of make sense to do so (admittedly there are probably very few places with computers like that left though). The seller does list that the software is distributed under the GPL license, and if he/she has provided you the full source code with your Mixxx CD, then he/she is complying with the GPL.

Also before you give the seller negative feedback, I would encourage you to pursue his/her "Full 14 day refund policy" as written under the "Guarantee" section of the eBay listing. Perhaps you can get your money back.

Cheers,
-G

Hey Jus,

In the past we have made trademark infringement claims against anyone who used our logo as part of selling Mixxx. This is a good point, because it isn't likely that this eBay seller removed all of our logos from the copy they distribute. Perhaps we could ask this person to remove any of our logos.

An additional requirement is that they must comply with the GPL terms, including section 3. Since this distribution is commercial, they must comply with either clause 3(a) or clause 3(b). (http://www.gnu.org/licenses/gpl-2.0.html). Essentially they must include a copy of the source code with the CD or a written offer of a copy of the source code, valid for 3 years. Providing a link to our site to download the source code is not acceptable, even if they have not made modifications, due to the commercial use of the software.

Good points,
RJ

@jus

We [mixxx - the project] hold:
1. the copyright to Mixxx's code, artwork, documentation, etc
--> These materials are mostly licensed to the world through the GPL, provided parties comply with the terms they are good, if they fail to comply with them we can go after them for breaching the license and thus violating copyright (since the license is what grants use of the copyrighted works).

2. "Mixxx" the trademark
--> This we hold exclusively, here we can deal with anything that would be seen as Trademark Infringement (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trademark_infringement) with a notice asking them to stop/remove it and use trademark law if they don't stop.

It is not my intend to hijack this thread but if i have the chance to talk to someone thus familiar with the topic....

So it is enough to remove the trademarked logo from the product description/screenshots?
It does not matter if the trademark is mentioned in the source code / product description / documentation / skins?

I`m just asking so i know how to do it right if i stock up my ebay store ;-)

Just to drag you all back to my problem, can you explain how I copy CDs onto my PC so that the MAXXX system picks it up immediately ?

As Windows Media Player grabs the disc, what CD Burner should I download that will work immediately with MAXXX ?

I am sorry if this sounds a simple request but I am new to all this and just need a cheap PC-DJ system to use for my local football club. They have suffered many break ins and need to raise funds, so rather than paying £50-100 for a DJ for 3-4 hrs work, I thought I;d have a go.

Cheers

Mark

Hi Mark,

As I said in my previous answer, you should use any CD ripper tool of your choice, as long as it rips in a format that Mixxx works with. I would stay away from Windows Media Player because that tool will rip your audio in the Windows Media Audio format. I would suggest using a Free and open-source CD ripper tool such as CDex (http://cdexos.sourceforge.net/).

Again, In order to play music files in Mixxx, they must be in an audio format that Mixxx supports. Mixxx supports MP3, WAV, AIFF, FLAC, and Ogg/Vorbis, so make sure to rip songs from your CDs in one of these formats in order to use them with Mixxx.

Make sure to rip your audio into the same Library folder that you use for Mixxx. This is the folder that you chose when you first installed Mixxx. To lookup your Mixxx library folder, from the Mixxx preferences, go to the 'Library' section and you will see it.

Also, the project name is Mixxx, not MAXXX. Not sure where you got the 'A' from :).

Best regards,
RJ Ryan
