MET distributions changing for some processes, but not others

Asked by Emma Castiglia

I am using MadGraph5_v1_5_14 and Delphes 3 to create tag_1_delphes_events.root files for three processes:
-Z boson plus neutrinos
 process card: generate p p > z j, z > vl vl~
   add process p p > z j j, z > vl vl~
   add process p p > z j j j, z > vl vl~
-ttbar
 process card: generate p p > t t~
-W boson plus jets
 process card: generate p p > w+ j j
   add process p p > w+ j j j
   add process p p > w+ j j j j
   add process p p > w- j j
   add process p p > w- j j j
   add process p p > w- j j j j

I am trying to create sample files that range over varying values of Missing Energy. I am making files for 0-100 GeV, 100-500 GeV, 500-800 GeV and 800-1000GeV. In the run_card I changed misset and missetmax values before I generated each file of events. When looking at the MET distributions in the completed process files, Z boson plus neutrinos displayed the correct varying MET distribution, but the distributions for W boson plus jets and ttbar were unchanged. The run_01_tag_banner.txt for each run showed the changing MET range, but the tag_1_delphes_events.root file distribution of MET did not.

Does anyone know why the MET distribution is not changing for W plus jets and ttbar? Thank you.

Dear Emma,

I guess that you are confusing parton-level cut (before shower) and detector level cut.
At parton-level cut the missing ET is simply the sum of the momenta of the neutrino.
Since the tt~ and W+jets sample does not have any neutrino, you can not spit the parton level generation in various sample depending on the missing ET value.

Cheers,

Olivier
