LHAPDF amc@nlo interface compilation error

Asked by Matthew Lim

Dear MadGraph Team,
I am having a problem running an NLO process using the lhapdf interface. The process compiles fine when used with the default pdf set, but as soon as I switch to lhapdf I am given the following error:

Hi Matthew,
from the error, it looks like a clash between compilers.
Which compiler is used by amc@nlo?
and which one is used for lhapdf?

Let me know,

Marco

Hi Marco,
Checking the Source/make_opts file in amc@nlo I can see that gfortran and g++ are used. Having recompiled lhapdf it appears that they are also used here. All the GNU compilers are of the same version (4.8.1) on my machine.
Many thanks,
Matthew

Hi Mathew,
googling the error a bit on the internet, it looks like it may be a 32bit/64bit clash.
What machine are you using?
Can you try to recompile (again :-( ) lhapdf, passing
FFLAGS =-mcmodel=medium
to the ./configure command?

Let me know,

Marco

Hi Marco,
As far as I know everything on my machine is 64 bit - it is a MacBook Pro running Ubuntu 13.10. Recompiling again with the flags passed does not seem to solve the problem - when running at leading order, I had to pass the same flag in make_opts which fixed the problem there but doing the same does not help at NLO for some reason.
Thanks,
Matthew

Hi Matthew,
so for madevent (LO) processes the mcmodel flag solves the problem, while
it does not for aMC@NLO processes, right?

where did you add the flag in the aMC@NLO case?

i would add it here

FFLAGS+= -ffixed-line-length-132

let me know,

Marco

Hi Marco,
Yes, this is where I have added the flag in both cases.

Hi Marco and Matthew,

I'm facing the same issue with ubuntu 14.04 and gfortran 4.8.2, when running a NLO FixedOrderAnalysis.

I was able to eliminate the LHAPDF errors by recompiling LHAPDF 5.9.1 with -mcmodel=medium -fPIC and I have placed this same line in the FFLAGS+=.. in make_ops.inc.

However now I have similar issues in born.f and symmetry_fks_test_ME.f, that I'm not really able to fix, see log example below. Maybe there are some other places where we should include these flags?

Cheers,
Stefano

Hi Stefano,
Thanks for the answer.
what you reported looks really like a compiler issue (ie part of the code being compiled with a compiler and another part with another compiler, or the code being compiled with one compiler but linked against the wrong iybraries, ..)
anyway, here
http://amcatnlo.web.cern.ch/amcatnlo/list_detailed2.htm#dependencies
there are some settings for SLC5/6 which turned to be crucial in order to have aMC@NLO and LHAPDF working well together.
I think they are quite platform specific, so i’m not 100% sure they will be of help for you, but i put them here as a reference for future problems (in the meanwhile let me know if you find them useful.)
Thanks!

Marco
