Hang at INFO: Creating Plots for Delphes level

Asked by William Shepherd

Hello,

This problem has been documented previously and listed as solved, but I'm still getting identical behavior to that described in https://bugs.launchpad.net/madgraph5/+bug/1198655, https://answers.launchpad.net/mg5amcnlo/+question/230244, and https://answers.launchpad.net/mg5amcnlo/+question/235449, likely among others. I encounter it for any process I run, I get reasonable plots at the parton and pythia levels but not at Delphes.

I have run this in the instance of MG5 I installed some time ago and allowed to self-update, and tried a fresh install as well with identical results. Please advise.

I am having the same problem on Ubuntu 14.04 with a 64 bit architecture working with the newest version of Madgraph, 2.2.1 and both Delphes and Delphes2. If I don't install Madanalysis then the calculation doesn't hang, but the LHCO file produced by Delphes is empty.

Another peculiar effect of this bug is that when I cancel the computation (ctrl+c) it messes up my terminal and it no line breaks when I press 'enter' leading me to close the terminal and open a new one. Pythia and PGS both seem to be working appropriately. I have not tried to use Delphes externally.

Hi,

Looks like the default delphes_card use in MG5 is not compatible with the latest version of Delphes.
Could you try to use the card for CMS and/or ATLAS instead?
Cards/delphes_card_CMS.dat
Cards/delphes_card_ATLAS.dat

Cheers,

Olivier

Hi Oliver,

Thanks for your quick response! I tried using the CMS or ATLAS cards and they both give a new error:

   INFO: Running Delphes
ERROR: Fail to create LHCO events from DELPHES

(before there was no acknowledgement of an issue from Madgraph)

Hi,

Could you ensure that those file are correct for the version of Delphes that you use?
Since you play with both version, you can have a mismatch.

If you are sure that you are using Delphes3 and the correct Delphes3 card, then you should report the content of the Delphes.log
at the Delphes author (they do not support anymore Delphes2): https://cp3.irmp.ucl.ac.be/projects/delphes

Cheers,

Olivier

I think you were right that there was a mismatch. I did a clean install and found that I no longer got the error. Delphes is finally producing the LHCO file!

Also I want to point out that Delphes2 didn't work for some reason. So if someone is having the same issue then make sure to try the previous version as well.

Thanks again for your help!
Jeff
