totem plugins missing

Asked by Matt Scholz

I ran the two command lines for my Ubuntu 7.04 distro, yet I am still unable to play DVDs on totem. I get a message saying "Totem cannot play this kind of media (DVD) because you don't have appropriate plugins to handle it." Everything seemed to install just fine from the output term was giving me, but I'm a complete newbie so....I do know that if I try to run a locate command from term to find any of the packages, I get no result.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Matt

Hi,

Thanks for the quick response. Unfortunately, I already installed the
medibuntu and installing the regionset package didn't fix the problem in
ubuntu 7.04. I'm new to this, but am concerned about the installation
process. Even though everything said it went as it should, when I type:

*locate libdvdcss2

or

locate **libdvdcss2**

I come up with nothing. Since this is part of the package, shouldn't I be
able to locate it?

Thanks again for suffering my ignorance,

Matt

Hello,

locate is not accurate for things you just installed because the locate database has not updated yet.

you can see where the files of a package are installed with dpkg -L :
dpkg -L libdvdcss2

Are you sure you have all the needed packages installed ?
libdvdcss2 is not enough, you also need these packages : libdvdread3 libxine1-ffmpeg

to see if they are installed you can type this command:
apt-cache policy libdvdread3 libxine1-ffmpeg libdvdcss2

Thanks again for your help. I think we are getting close to the answer. Even
though I have repeated the steps for 7.04 as presented on the HowTo page
(and tried again using the steps presented on the alternate method page),
all the files are apparently not installing. Following your suggested
commands, here is the output I get

~$ dpkg -L libdvdcss2
Package `libdvdcss2' is not installed.

~$ apt-cache policy libdvdread3 libxine1-ffmpeg libdvdcss2
libdvdread3:
  Installed: 0.9.7-2ubuntu1
  Candidate: 0.9.7-2ubuntu1
  Version table:
 *** 0.9.7-2ubuntu1 0
        500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com feisty/universe Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
libxine1-ffmpeg:
  Installed: (none)
  Candidate: 1.1.4-2ubuntu3
  Version table:
     1.1.4-2ubuntu3 0
        500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com feisty/universe Packages
libdvdcss2:
  Installed: (none)
  Candidate: 1.2.9-2medibuntu2+build1
  Version table:
     1.2.9-2medibuntu2+build1 0
        500 http://packages.medibuntu.org feisty/free Packages

In other words, only some of the packages are installing. How do I remedy
this?

Take care,

Matt

You can install the missing packages with:

sudo apt-get install libdvdcss2 libxine1-ffmpeg

The good news is that I was able to finally install the packages. The bad news is I still get the same error message from Totem. Here's my output showing that the packages are installed:

:~$ apt-cache policy libdvdread3 libxine1-ffmpeg libdvdcss2
libdvdread3:
  Installed: 0.9.7-2ubuntu1
  Candidate: 0.9.7-2ubuntu1
  Version table:
 *** 0.9.7-2ubuntu1 0
        500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com feisty/universe Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
libxine1-ffmpeg:
  Installed: 1.1.4-2ubuntu3
  Candidate: 1.1.4-2ubuntu3
  Version table:
 *** 1.1.4-2ubuntu3 0
        500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com feisty/universe Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
libdvdcss2:
  Installed: 1.2.9-2medibuntu2+build1
  Candidate: 1.2.9-2medibuntu2+build1
  Version table:
 *** 1.2.9-2medibuntu2+build1 0
        500 http://packages.medibuntu.org feisty/free Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

Are there any other packages I might need? Thanks again.

Strange.

Can you try with another program ?
Navigate to Applications -> Add/Remove
search for "dvd"

and add the "ogle" program

Can you play dvd's with ogle ?

Hi again. Yes! Ogle works fine. I suppose I'll just remove Totem, unless you
want me to do something to help troubleshoot it. I appreciate your patience.

Take care,

Matt
