Me TV won't run on Ubuntu 12.04

Asked by Ben Murch

I just installed v1.4 via the ppa but it won't run.

typing me-tv-client in the terminal produces the following...

ben@desktop:~$ me-tv-client
Me TV 1.4.0.12
2013-04-19 01:02:49: Me TV Server 1.4.0.12 started
2013-04-19 01:02:49: An unhandled exception was generated
2013-04-19 01:02:49: Error: The Me TV database version does not match the Me TV server version.
19/04/13 01:02:54: Exception: Failed to communicate with Me TV server

Any suggestions how to fix this?

Many thanks,

Ben

Hi Ben,

Can you try deleting the file me-tv.db in the folder "~/.local/share/me-tv"
before starting me-tv ? It should give you the config dialog at the first
start.

Cheers,
Fred

Hi Fred,

Me-tv now launches with the scan wizard, but with only the option to
import a channels.conf file - no scan option.

It occurs to me that I had previously installed v1.3 (?) from the USC,
which worked, but only allowed me one channel, hence my upgrade to 1.4.
I uninstalled the old version before installing the new but maybe
something was leftover which is causing this?

If I try apt-get purge, then reinstall might that resolve the issue?

Cheers,

Ben

Hi Fred,

Ok, so I purged and also autoremoved me-tv, then deleted ~/local/share/me-tv then reinstalled.

Same result: scan wizard without a scan option. Should there be one like in v1.3?

So I ran "scan" in the terminal which generated a huge list, but no sign of a channel.conf file, so I'm not sure how to proceed now.

When I originally installed from USC, I was asked my location (europe - uk) and format (PAL), but I don't see any sign of these setup options. Also the scan wizard describes my device as "device text". I have a usb Hauppauge WinTV Nova T, though the previous version called it something else.

Cheers,

Ben

Hi Ben,

Me-tv v1.4 don't have a scan built in. You have to use w_scan to create a
channels.conf file.
Here is an example:
"w_scan -c CA -X > channels.conf"

w_scan = the program to run
-c CA = Specify that my country is Canada
-X = Specify that we want the output file to be in format
"Xine"
> = redirect the output in
channels.conf = in this file

Cheers,
Fred

Hi Fred,

Thanks for the example.
I substituted CA for GB (I'm in the UK) and ten minutes later had a
channels.conf file.
I had to search for it, mind, but it imported and produced a Channels
Editor with my expected channels. However I still can't watch anything.

Over the weekend I installed v.1.3.7(?) on my Mint 14 laptop from the
repos, It works fine, and has a channel list at the foot of the window,
which I notice is absent from my Ubuntu install and which presumably
should be there (unless v.1.4 is different). None of the buttons along
the bottom of the window respond.

Launching from the terminal produces this output:

ben@desktop:~$ me-tv-client
Me TV 1.4.0.12
2013-04-22 22:16:53: Me TV Server 1.4.0.12 started
2013-04-22 22:16:53: Device: 'DiBcom 7000PC' (DVB-T) at
"/dev/dvb/adapter0/frontend0"
2013-04-22 22:16:53: Starting socket service on port 1999
2013-04-22 22:16:53: Me TV Server entering main loop

Which looks healthy to me (is it healthy?)

Any ideas?

Cheers,
Ben

The channels list and the buttons at the bottom of the screen are sometimes
minimize. You have to slide it open to get it.

Aha - never would have guessed that!

Excellent. Great image and sound. All looks good, though I haven't
tried recording yet.
One minor issue though - the channel list doesn't retain the ordering
from the editor. Is there a trick?

Many thanks for all your help, Fred.

Ben

Hi,

For the channels ordering, this is a known bug. In fact, it is not a bug,
but instead a missing feature.

Cheers,
Frederic
